Coyote Attack off Brockett Road

Coyote Attacked Small Dog in Fenced Yard on Brockett Road.  Yard Abuts Creek—Warning to Neighbors!

Saturday, June 15, 2013  1500 Block of Brockett Road, Tucker

A coyote entered a fenced yard that abuts the creek and attacked a small (10 lb) rat terrier around 8 am Saturday morning around 8:30 am.  Animal Control has been notified, and they suggest keeping a close watch on small pets, especially catsThis was a hunting-style attack, not a dogfight.  Homeowners heard the terrier shriek and saw a large, feathery-tailed gray and brown/black animal attacking their dog.  Shouts stopped the fight, the terrier escaped to the house, and homeowners chased after the animal, whereupon it jumped the fence and took off up the creek.

One witness’ first impression was “coyote,” while another’s was “shepherd.”  This was a large animal, perhaps 50 pounds, but DeKalb Animal Control believes it was likely a coyote.  While this was a daylight attack, Animal Control believes it was close enough to dawn that it could have been a coyote.   The officer suggested keeping small pets inside at night and at dusk/dawn, prime coyote hunting hours.

This attack left wounds needing staples, antibiotics, and pain killers.

Animal Control will step up patrols in this area.  Keep in mind that the coyote jumped a chain-link fence to escape the yard.  Parents of small children note that this animal attacked in broad daylight, so something is very odd about it.

Please notify DeKalb Animal Control if you see this animal.
