EJ, the basic premise here is that young adults should learn to evaluate their own positions on gun control objectively, based on facts only, without accusation, cliche, label or name-calling.
Thank you for your question. As to Cho Seung-Hui's not being a white guy, that doesn't change the fact that most mass killers are white guys.

ReplyThank you for commenting, Mr. Lang. While this story has nothing to do with innovation, politics or labeling, it has everything to do with moving America forward in a changing world order by simply meeting people on their own turfs when we want to do business with them. The key to our success in environments other than our own means that we have to bend a bit.
More importantly, though, it means moving steadily forward by avoiding having to apologize. We do that by dealing fairly and keeping our word. The "whatever it takes" school of thought is passé in global commerce.
And perhaps most importantly is preparing our coming generations to succeed in this emerging global marketplace.

ReplyThe $2.4 billion was paid in settlement for sexual abuse -- whatever type. You're entitled to your reliance on Church leaders to tell you what to think, Tom, and I'm entitled to my independent opinions based on logic, human rights and social justice. I don't try to convince you to change your approach, and trust you won't try to change mine either.

ReplyYes, I read that interview, but on Huffington Post. He did say, "For the moment, I am in favor of maintaining celibacy, with all its pros and cons" -- For the moment; let's see if he changes his mind. He said celibacy has worked for centuries, but history refutes that claim in the amount of $2.4 billion in recent years alone, as settlement for priests who could not practice celibacy, and their superiors who protected them. Just today, news has come out that Cardinal O'Brien (Scotland) had a gay lover (another priest) for years while preaching against gay relations.
It's easy to quote scholarly references, but the facts speak louder. The Church has work to do and I believe that eventually it will see that.

ReplyTom, do you mean that John Paul II wants *everyone* to enjoy sex? Or just heterosexuals?
Although I'm under no illusion that either your view or mine will change, you might be interested in reading about a 13th C Pope who promoted contraception. I offer this as a reference that the Church can adjust some of its cultural decrees, given the will to do so:

ReplyTom, thank you for this comprehensive explanation of the Church's teaching on homosexuality and gay marriage. May I point out that I believe the Church must find some way to allow for sexual expression of both hetero- and homosexuals among clergy if abuse problems are to be resolved, rather than just controlled. That is the issue I have addressed in this blog.
The allowance for expression of sexuality may require some creativity in the Church's approach and I'm confident that, if they can saint and unsaint people, and reject parts of the Gospel, they can certainly find a way to adjust their catechismic teachers on sexuality, both among the clergy and the laity.

This is great information! Another aspect to this is our life-approach. With retirement, work-related expenses are blown away. We have no more need to impress anyone; we can finally be ourselves. And, when we move toward a simpler, more relation-based lifestyle, we find ourselves more at peace, as I've experienced. Here's my blog about this: http://cumming.patch.com/blog_posts/peace-comes-dropping-slowly
