The Week Ahead: Education, Cityhood, Goodwill, and Tucker Day

Five things to know about.

The DeKalb Board of Education will hold the following meetings on Monday, May 6: 2 p.m. Work Session; 3 p.m. Committee of the Whole; 4 p.m. Executive Session for a student appeal and a legal matter; 5:45 p.m. Community Meeting for Public Comments; 7 p.m. Business Meeting. All will take place at BOE HQ, 1701 Mountain Industrial Boulevard in Stone Mountain. DeKalb Delegation's Cityhood Town Hall Meeting is Monday, May 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Clairmont Hills Baptist Church, 1995 Clairmont Drive, Decatur. From May 6–10, Goodwill of North Georgia will host a variety of events, including job fairs and employment workshops at its career centers, giveaways for donors and shoppers and drawings for Goodwill gift cards. Tucker’s DeMarcus Taylor Takes MVP Play to Clark Atlanta

By Dwight Taylor, father of former Tucker Tiger DeMarcus Taylor DeMarcus Taylor played in his first college baseball game on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013. It was a Super Bowl Sunday for him. DeMarcus pitched in the night cap of a double hitter. He pitched a complete game as he propelled Clark Atlanta University to a 10 to one victory over St. Augustine University from North Carolina. The score was two to zero in the bottom of the fifth inning when Clark Atlanta scored five runs to put the game out of reach. However, the game was out of reach when DeMarcus took the mound in the first inning. In seven complete innings, DeMarcus had six strike outs and zero walks while allowing one run in the sixth inning. Basketball: Tucker, Stephenson Split Thrilling Contests

Tucker and Stephenson split nail biters in Region 6-AAAAA basketball action.

Region 6-AAAAA high school basketball is considered one of the toughest regions in the state and Tuesday’s action at Tucker with both games decided in the final seconds upheld that thought. Tucker’s Tori Robinson drove the lane for the game-winning layup with 1:08 to play as the No. 2 ranked Lady Tigers upended the No. 1 ranked Stephenson Lady Jaguars 46-45 in girls’ play. Kerry Watson had given Stephenson a 45-44 advantage by scoring on a steal and a three-point shot to rally the Lady Jaguars (18-3) from a 44-40 deficit to the one-point lead with 3:47 to play. Tucker Cross Country Girls Qualify for State

Lady Tigers earned a berth in the Class AAAAA meet in Carrollton on Nov. 10.

Top 10 finishes from Naima and Nuba Jackson fueled a Region 6-AAAAA fourth place finish by the Tucker Lady Tigers and earned a berth in the Class AAAAA state cross country meet in Carrollton this month.   It is the first team state meet berth for the Lady Tigers since the late 1980s. Tucker’s Tracey Harrell finished third in the 1988 and 1989 Class AAA state meets.   Naima Jackson was sixth overall in the Region 6-AAAAA individual results with a time of 20:16.13 and Nuba Jackson was ninth in a time of 21:09.64 in leading the Lady Tigers past Southwest DeKalb (111-125) to claim the final state meet berth.   Nadia Lee finished 30th overall in a time of 24.22.66, Nuri Lee was 33rd in 25:26.90 and Sharik Jones was 36th to round out the scoring…

Tucker Versus Lakeside Friday at Adams Stadium

The Tucker Tigers (4-0) go against the Lakeside Vikings (1-3) Friday night at Adams Stadium, starting at 7:30 p.m. The game will be streaming live here on Tucker Patch. Hallford Stadium will host the first meeting of the Southwest DeKalb-Stephenson high school football rivalry since 2005 as the pair of perennial DeKalb County playoff contenders meet at 7:30 p.m. in a Region 6-AAAAA game. Southwest DeKalb (3-1) is coming off a tough 14-7 defensive Region 6-AAAAA match up with Mays to stay in the playoff hunt. The Panthers, 2-1 in region play, won the last meeting between the two schools 6-0 in 2005 and lead the series 5-3. DeKalb Middle Schools Football: Recap and Preview

Looking back on week four, and forward to week five.

DeKalb County Middle School Football moves into the fifth week of play on Saturday with the undefeated Bethune Lions (3-0, 1-0) taking on the undefeated Champion Chargers (3-0, 1-0) for the lead in the Region 1 standings. The pair meets at Avondale Stadium for a 10:30 a.m. kickoff to see who takes control of Region 1. The Lions come into the game on a 19 game regular season winning streak following a 50-20 win over the Tucker Tigers (1-3, 1-1) last week. Champion had a bye-week after shutting out Sequoyah (0-4, 0-2) 58-0 in Week 3 action. Region 2 also has a game with the winner coming out with the lead in the standings as Cedar Grove (3-1, 2-0) takes on Salem (3-1, 2-0) in a 10:30 a.m. meeting at Hallford Stadium on Saturday. DeKalb Schools Baseball: Week Two Results - Tucker Goes 3-0

Tucker rolls to three wins in Week Two of baseball.

An impressive showing by Tucker served as the main highlight among many for DeKalb County schools in baseball action from last week. Coach Bobby Gonzalez and the Tucker Tigers bounced back from a pair of tough losses the previous week to roll past Berkmar (8-2) Feb. 27, Central Gwinnett (10-3) Feb. 29 and Meadowcreek (6-0) March 2 in a 3-0 run that pushed their overall record to 3-2. Coach Terrence Canty’s Miller Grove Wolverines posted a perfect showing for the second straight week, besting Towers (5-1) Feb. 27 and Cedar Grove (8-1) March 2 to improve to 3-0 overall for the year.
