Walker: School Board Has Done Nothing Wrong

The DeKalb County Board of Education chairman and District 9 member said he doesn't believe the school board did anything to warrant dozens of complaints sent to SACS.

DeKalb County Board of Education Chairman Gene Walker said last week he doesn't believe the board did anything to warrant dozens of claims of mismanagement sent to the school system's top accreditor. SACS – the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools – notified the school system of the complaints in a letter late last month, and the school system is crafting its response, according to a Neighbor Newspapers report. Walker's response in the story: School Board Chairman Eugene Walker dismissed the notion that this latest round of controversy tarnishes the district’s image. “Remember now, SACS is not accusing us of anything,” Walker said. “I feel strongly that we’re acting appropriately … but, people make allegations. It’s the …

DeKalb Schools Responds to SACS

The oversight body again warned DeKalb Schools earlier this month after numerous complaints from parents and staff.

DeKalb Schools Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson has sent a letter in response to a warning from the school's accrediting agency earlier this month, 11 Alive News reports. The warning letter from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, which has the power to pull DeKalb's accreditation, cited numerous complaints from staff and parents. Atkinson wrote that the "district has implemented plans to improve upon all standards." SACS letter in September specifically cited the board's legal costs. The district has been accumulating legal fees related to charges of corruption and internal dealing by a former superintendent and a former executive staffer. Atkinson in her letter cited ongoing improvements: an internal legal team that was …

I read Dr. Atkinson's letter boasting of everything she's put in place since taking office. Sent her and the school board emails asking when they are going to get around to putting teachers in my 2 sons 4 classes without one at Tucker High School. No response yet. Didn't even receive a grade on progress reports sent home yesterday for the first 4.5 weeks of school that are now down the drain.   more ›

SACS Is Not a Thermostat

School Board candidate writes about the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, SACS, is the organization that holds the accreditation process for DeKalb County School System, DCSS. As a candidate for DCSS District 4 Board of Education, I am studying the rules and regulations of board membership and ethics are a particular area of interest given the recent history of DCSS. Current board members have made comments, in conversation and in a campaign forum, that made me sit down hard and think about what they said: "A school board member is not allowed to enter a school without the express permission of the superintendent." I've been searching on the SACS website now for the rule that states that, or an explanation, or even if it exists. For an organization whose sole …

To make matters worse, parents with complaints are urged to email their PTA board members who are told to "hold all complaints" and "let them vent if they need to," but they do not ever intend to actually do anything about it, keep any records or contact anyone in the school, much less the board, about it. They are a buffer between the parents and the school, so the only issues that do get …   more ›
