Celebration of Tucker History 1892-2012

Browning Courthouse receives two historically significant items at Tucker’s 120th Anniversary celebration.

The old Browning Courthouse was filled with the inquisitive and curious on Saturday, both young and old, in honor of Tucker’s 120th birthday. Two beautiful pieces of Tucker history were donated; the original post office desk from the early 1890s, and an original church pew from Tucker Congregational Church from the late 1890s. The grandchildren of Alpheus (Alf) Chewning, Nan and Theron Chewning, came to dedicate their Grandfather’s Post Office desk from 1892. Alf and his wife Delilah ran a general store in Tucker in the 1890s, and Alf ran the post office from the general store. He held the Postmaster position for 23 years. The Hardy family came to the ceremony to dedicate a church pew from the Tucker Congregational Church that once stood …
