Tucker, Lakeside Cityhood Discussed at DeKalb Cityhood Meeting

Tucker parent Michelle Penkava was one of our local residents who spoke at Monday night's meeting.

At a meeting that seemed to be designed to slow the on-rushing train of cityhood, Democrats in DeKalb’s legislative delegation urged residents to consider a variety of issues before deciding to incorporate. “You all have gotten our attention in a very substantial way; we hear you,” said state Sen. Jason Carter (D-42) told the several hundred people in attendance. “I’m not sold on the idea of creating new cities, but the fact that we have so many people here tonight is a good sign.” The meeting was held this past Monday at Clairmont Hills Baptist Church, and was hosted by state Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver (D-Decatur). Oliver has been an outspoken opponent of the way that cities are created in Georgia, most recently during the debate over …

I think that Oliver's city bill was a 'defense' against the other city bills, trying to prevent a 'land grab' into her district. She may not think that cities are the way to go, but if the tide is against her, she would rather keep the neigborhoods she represents under one government (city or county).   more ›

Op-Ed: A City Is More Than Boundaries

Who are we and what are we looking to preserve?

By a Tucker Citizen The North DeKalb Cityhood movements are going to change Tucker. Whether we incorporate or stay unincorporated, new economic and social forces will change the dynamic of our community in the coming years. A key question that we need to consider as we engage in our own cityhood discussion is, who are we and what are we looking to preserve? This is important for our future and once we have established goals we can then weigh our options for how to proceed. The cityhood debate will continue to focus on costs and the delivery of essential services, however Tucker has something else that must be considered. Tucker has a history and identity that is deserving of preservation. This is truly what is at stake and requires an …

The first public meeting of 'Tucker Together' will be Tuesday, April 30, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church's Fellowship Hall on LaVista Road, at 7 p.m. This follows the filing of House Bill 677 on March 26 as a placeholder for a potential city of Tucker. UPDATE: Proposed City of LaVista Hills Map Surfaces

The map, created by North Druid Hills resident Rhea Johnson, was sent to a Tucker cityhood blog Sunday.

UPDATE [1:53 p.m.]: A map for a proposed City of Lavista Hills that appeared on a Tucker blog Sunday does not represent The North Druid Hills Study Group and is not formally connected to state Senator Jason Carter, the group's leader said Monday afternoon. Though the map's creator, North Druid Hills resident Rhea Johnson, has worked with The North Druid Hills Study Group, it does not represent the study group, said Don Broussard, the group's head. Johnson called Patch on Monday afternoon and said he sent the map to the Tucker Initiative blog as part of an ongoing discussion about what the boundaries between a proposed City of Tucker and an adjacent city west of I-285 might look like. "It was related to the two-city conundrum that we seem …

I have a lawsuit filed against Dekalb County right now trying to get them to re-establish the road-grid in Scottdale. The area is cutoff from Ponce DeLeon and is economically isolated even though it is just across the railroad tracks from the Dekalb Farmers Market. Dekalb and Kathie Gannon created the overlay in that area to stop development of new housing and it worked. They killed off …   more ›

Questions for Lakeside City Alliance

A local parent poses questions to the Alliance and its guest speaker ahead of Thursday's meeting.

Dear Lakeside City Alliance Organizers, I plan on attending Thursday's meeting at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral and look forward to hearing the guest speaker Oliver Porter. However, I do have some questions for the speaker, if he will be taking any. I also have questions for your board members. I understand if time does not permit you to get to them, but I would appreciate a reply and would like to share the information with my personal contacts and friends on social media. I am also sharing my list of questions with some media contacts, such as the Tucker Patch.   I hope they will choose to publish these questions before your meeting so that if time permits and your panel has been unable to get to some of them, others might have the …

The April 18 event will be held at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation on Clairmont Road from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The Lakeside Community Alliance will hold its next community meeting at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation on Clairmont Road on April 18. The event, which is expected to draw hundreds of area residents interested in the potential formation of a city of Lakeside, will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the church’s Carlos Community Center at 2500 Clairmont Road. Volunteers from the alliance, a non-profit group, will take questions from the community about the pros and cons of incorporation.
