The GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Tournament starts in Macon this week.
Thirty-one DeKalb County wrestlers advanced from Sectionals to the GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Tournament at the Centreplex in Macon beginning on Thursday, Feb. 14. Class AAAAA schools from DeKalb led the way with 21 qualifiers with seven coming from Area 6-AAAAA champion Southwest DeKalb. The Panthers are led by Abud-Rhaman Yasir (145) and his 38-1 record. Lakeside put four wrestlers into the state tournament Round of 16 including junior Alex Rotta (182) who is 47-14 in his junior year and the Area champ. Junior Sunny Sharma (113) leads two Dunwoody wrestlers into the state action with his 39-9 record while Arabia Mountain is led by Alema Favors (126) 33-1 record with two wrestlers as well. Southwest DeKalb wins Area 6-AAAAA wrestling title.
The Southwest DeKalb Panthers were the only DeKalb team to win a traditional Area wrestling title over the weekend as they took the Area 6-AAAAA title over Lakeside at Dunwoody. Despite no other team titles DeKalb is sending 101 wrestlers on to the State Sectionals in the final step for qualifying for the GHSA Traditional State Wrestling Championships set for Macon on February 14-16 at the Macon Centreplex. The Panthers won five individual area gold medal title matches on the way to compiling a 250 point total followed by Lakeside with 165.5, Stephenson 148, Miller Grove 119 and Tucker 95. Tucker High hosted this year's DeKalb County Wrestling Championship over the weekend.
The Marist War Eagles swept the final three championship matches to get past Southwest DeKalb 223-210 to win the 2013 William S. Venable DeKalb County Wrestling Championship at Tucker High School on Saturday. The wins by Kenneth Brinson in 195 pound division, Jack Trainor in the 220 division and Steven Wallace in the 285 division gave the War Eagles the title. Marist also had gold medal winners in the 138 division by Mel Bethune and the 152 division by Matt Andres for a total haul of five in the championships. Brinson won by default over Miller Grove’s Wesley Williams 4:32 into the match to take the 195 title. The William S. Venable DeKalb County Varsity Wrestling Championships are underway at Tucker High School.
The 2013 William S. Venable DeKalb County Varsity Wrestling Championships got underway Friday in the Tucker High School Gymnasium that is named after him. Twenty-one teams are competing for the traditional wrestling team title including Arabia Mountain, Cedar Grove, Chamblee, Clarkston, Columbia, Decatur, Druid Hills, Dunwoody, Lakeside, Lithonia, Marist, Martin Luther King Jr., McNair, Miller Grove, Redan, St. Pius X, Southwest DeKalb, Stephenson, Stone Mountain, Towers and Tucker. McNair is the defending champion after capturing its first ever DeKalb County Wrestling Championship in 2012 with a 200.5 to 193 win over Marist. Carey Cloud is a 2011 graduate of Tucker High School.
Carey Cloud, a former Tucker High School wrestling state champion, fought his way to an eighth place finish in the NAIA National Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa to earn All-American accolades as freshman for William Penn University. Cloud finished his freshman campaign with a 16-11 overall record after going 4-3 in the 149-pound weigh class of the National Championship Tournament. A tough 3-2 overtime loss in the second round to Dickinson State’s Bradley Steele dropped him into the loser’s bracket where he put together three consecutive wins, including an overtime fall over Nicolas Clarke of York to earn All-American status. Twenty-three area champions plus 61 other DeKalb County wrestlers qualified for the GHSA State Sectionals on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 10-11) at various sites.
The Class AAAAA DeKalb wrestlers travel to Tift County for their sectional beginning on Friday at 4 p.m. and all finals matches (1st-8th place) begin at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Stephenson finished just 4.5 points behind Newnan in the Area 2-AAAAA team standings to take the runner-up slot. The Jaguars have five area champions headed to the sectional including Jabari Collins (120), Stephen Wylie (152), Darian Perry (160), Mike Gates (195) and Brandon Addison (285). The other Jaguars headed to sectionals are Torsha Bazz (106, 3rd), Dexter Brown (113, 2nd) and Henry Williams (126, 2nd). Tigers to compete in county tournament
The DeKalb County Championships have been kind to Tucker High wrestlers. And if the Tigers compete as they hope to, this weekend's tournament should be no different. When action begins on four mats at 5 p.m. Friday at Lakeside and resumes there at 9 a.m. Saturday, the Tigers have every intention to still be in the thick of the action come the 3:30 p.m. finals. Last year, Gabriel Miller and Carey Cloud won county championships at 125 and 152 pounds, respectively, helping Tucker match Marist's two individual titles, behind Stone Mountain's tournament-high three.
