The makeover show spruces up an old residence off LaVista Road.
Joy Glover Walters and her husband James recently welcomed a crew from A&E's Sell This House to renovate their two-story residence on Pine Meadows Court in Tucker. "The episode will air on May 18 at 10 a.m.," Walters told Patch. The couple and their four children had been living there for five years, Walters said, and were planning on selling it to get a larger house, but buyers were not interested. The problem? "Outdated cabinets, faux stone vinyl flooring, ugly wallpaper, and tacky wood paneling," according to the show's website. Over the course of a weekend, the show's team ripped out the old kitchen and replaced it, installed classic tile flooring and got rid of the wood panelling and "other remnants of their 1970s decor." "Now, when …

Who are we and what are we looking to preserve?
By a Tucker Citizen The North DeKalb Cityhood movements are going to change Tucker. Whether we incorporate or stay unincorporated, new economic and social forces will change the dynamic of our community in the coming years. A key question that we need to consider as we engage in our own cityhood discussion is, who are we and what are we looking to preserve? This is important for our future and once we have established goals we can then weigh our options for how to proceed. The cityhood debate will continue to focus on costs and the delivery of essential services, however Tucker has something else that must be considered. Tucker has a history and identity that is deserving of preservation. This is truly what is at stake and requires an …

The committee will gather publicly to discuss ideas for Tucker's future.
The first public meeting of 'Tucker Together' will be Tuesday, April 30, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church's Fellowship Hall on LaVista Road, at 7 p.m. This follows the filing of House Bill 677 on March 26 as a placeholder for a potential city of Tucker. The steering committee includes representatives from the Tucker Civic Association (TCA), the Smoke Rise Community Association (SRCA), Tucker Business Association (TBA), Tucker Historical Society (THS), Tucker Parent Council, Tucker Police Precinct, Main Street Tucker Alliance (MTA), and representatives from the faith community. "Tucker Together is neither in support or opposed to cityhood," said Harry Powell of the Tucker Historical Society. "The group’s primary focus is to provide the …

The map, created by North Druid Hills resident Rhea Johnson, was sent to a Tucker cityhood blog Sunday.
UPDATE [1:53 p.m.]: A map for a proposed City of Lavista Hills that appeared on a Tucker blog Sunday does not represent The North Druid Hills Study Group and is not formally connected to state Senator Jason Carter, the group's leader said Monday afternoon. Though the map's creator, North Druid Hills resident Rhea Johnson, has worked with The North Druid Hills Study Group, it does not represent the study group, said Don Broussard, the group's head. Johnson called Patch on Monday afternoon and said he sent the map to the Tucker Initiative blog as part of an ongoing discussion about what the boundaries between a proposed City of Tucker and an adjacent city west of I-285 might look like. "It was related to the two-city conundrum that we seem …

Suggestions from a local resident.
By Jim Spencer By now, I think just about everyone has heard about the various “cityhood” movements that are taking place in Northern DeKalb county (such as City of LaVista Hills, City of DeKalb, City of Lakeside, City of Tucker, City of Stonecrest), as well as some of the discussions by a few existing cities to annex adjoining areas - Stone Mountain, Chamblee as examples. There was a LARGE response by the Tucker community to the perceived movement by the Lakeside group to annex a large chunk of Tucker without any discussion. Emotions ran high, and people seemed to be fired up. I was pleased to see the turnout. A place holder bill was filed for the City of Tucker. It, however, was received with a very lukewarm response. In various …

The former TCA president discusses local issues with the Atlanta newsweekly.
Leslie Richardson, who just completed her stint as president of the Tucker Civic Association, gave an interview to Creative Loafing for their current Neighborhood Guide issue. "Tucker's the best-kept secret in Atlanta," she said. "It's unincorporated, so we manage everything with all of our groups. We've got all of these community groups and a real sense of community because of that. We're not expecting anyone to do anything for us. We're doing it ourselves." Richardson talked about a partnership that began last year with the Atlanta Regional Commission to start a Lifelong Communities program designed to help senior citizens stay in their homes rather than move to assisted living. "(We) put together a survey. It asks things like what do …

A map of what things could look like down the road.
A Patch reader has put together this map, trying to anticipate the near future in DeKalb and how things may shake out after the dust has settled. Both the new "cities" of Briarcliff / Lakeside and Tucker are shown, as well as the possible (probable?) annexations of Chamblee, Doraville and Decatur to clean up the leftovers.

A local resident writes about the Tucker-Lakeside situation.
First I would like to say how proud I am that our cohesive Tucker community turned out for the meeting Monday night at Tucker Middle School dispelling the perception that Tucker is not a community. It is very unfortunate that many residents were turned away as the venue was not large enough to accommodate the crowd. After speaking with many neighbors and friends, as well as reading a multitude of comments online (thank you, Tucker Patch, Twitter, and Tucker Town Talk), this is what I have gleaned from our situation: there is a general feeling that Lakeside City Alliance has not begun this process as a conversation. By dropping a bill in the state legislature and not convening meetings of the Tucker community BEFORE that occurrence, the …

The placeholder bill, submitted Monday by Dunwoody state Sen. Fran Millar, excises a large portion of Tucker from the Lakeside City Alliance's previous map.
The Lakeside City Alliance finally had its own placeholder cityhood bill submitted to the state legislature Monday, but it arrives with one significant change – it's got less Tucker in it. The alliance announced the bill's filing at a contentious cityhood meeting hosted by DeKalb County Commissioner Elaine Boyer at Tucker Middle School on Monday evening. Dunwoody state Sen. Fran Millar filed the bill hours after Decatur state Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver filed another placeholder cityhood bill dedicated to residents of the Druid Hills and Briarcliff areas. But the Lakeside City Alliance's new map excises much of Tucker from the proposal, including the Main Street Tucker area that was previously part of it. The alliance's last map included a …
The bill, which does not include a map, would allow for discussion among Mary Margaret Oliver's constituents, the state representative said.
State Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver filed a bill in the state legislature Monday that she said allows residents in the Druid Hills and Briarcliff areas to discuss and study cityhood over the next year – the first official step toward creating a new city. Oliver's bill, HB 665, does not include a map of a proposed city, and it's short – about two sentences. It does not name a specific area, including Druid Hills, and says it intends only to create a city in DeKalb County. Oliver, D-Decatur, said she did not want to specify an area because she didn't want to limit options. She has been a critic of cityhood movements and new incorporation, particularly in nearby Brookhaven, but said she didn't want her constituents to be "buffaloed into a new …
