Talking Trash: Sanitation Service Meeting Tuesday

Today's event is at the Tucker-Reid H. Cofer library.

The powers that be in DeKalb County are holding a series of public meetings this month to discuss the future of garbage pick-up and recycling in the area. The first of what they are calling "Sanitation Service Public Outreach Meetings" is taking place at Tucker's library, starting at 6:30 p.m., and the public is invited to join in. Tucker Library to Hold Fundraising Book Sale

The annual sale will benefit programs for kids, teens and adults at Tucker-Reid H. Cofer Library.

The Friends of Tucker-Reid H. Cofer Library will be having their annual book sale on Oct. 20 in the meeting room of the library from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. The Friends will be selling hardback books for $2 and all other books, CDs and DVDs for less than $2! Nice, large book bags to carry your new finds will be $8. There will be mysteries and suspense, science fiction, biographies, history, travel, religious, crafts and hobbies, self-help, parenting and lots of children's books. Name a category and it will probably be there. Tucker Library Brick Dedication Leaves Legacy

Brick donations at three branches raised $8,000 for the DeKalb Library Foundation.

At brick dedications last month, families and community members saw for the first time their engraved bricks that were placed at Tucker-Reid H. Cofer Library. Commemorative bricks were installed for the dedication with engraved messages such as “READ and QUERY All Your Lives,” “READING CHANGES LIVES,” “avid reader and teacher,” and “DCPL Staff is the Best.” Donations for the bricks raised nearly $8,000 for the DeKalb Library Foundation to benefit the library system. Those who had bricks installed at the Tucker-Reid H. Cofer Library included District 6 Commissioner Kathie Gannon, Library Director Alison Weissinger, DeKalb Library Foundation Treasurer Bill Harshman and Friends Alliance President Janis Jones. Tucker Library Awarded Environmental Design Certification

Local branch scoops silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Tucker's Reid H. Cofer Library has been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED-NC) Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, it was announced today. Tucker-Reid is the first library bond project in DeKalb County to receive LEED certification at any level. “The DeKalb County Public Library System is visionary in its approach to sustainability,” said Jerry Voith, vice president and managing principal of Leo A. Daly, designers of the building. “Both the county and our project team wanted to build a library that not only had world-class facilities but also was committed to its sustainable responsibilities. The Friends of Tucker-Reid H. Cofer Library will sponsor a seminar given by Micah Wood at the library on Saturday, June 23 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.   This program is free and open to the public.
