Four basketball teams make way to state tournament, but Tucker is not among them.
DeKalb County high school basketball teams moved on to the Class AAAAA state playoffs Final Four at the expense of fellow DeKalb teams on Tuesday night. Miller Grove swept a pair of Top 10 match ups at home against fellow DeKalb and Region 6-AAAAA opponent Tucker to pick up two of the Final Four spots. The No. 3 ranked and 2012 Class AAAA state champion Lady Wolverines (25-5) got nine fourth quarter points from senior guard Katie Hunt to rally for a 50-40 victory over the No. 2 ranked Tucker Lady Tigers (25-5). Jamese Abney scored 19 points to lead the Redan Lady Raiders to a 60-42 Region 6-AAAA home victory over Chamblee on Tuesday. The win improves the No. 2 ranked (MaxPreps) Lady Raiders to 11-0 on the season and on a collision course in Region 6A-AAAA action against Class AAAA No. 1 ranked (MaxPreps) Columbia on Friday at Columbia. Redan forced 11 first half turnovers and Brea Elmore scored 11 points as the Lady Raiders ran out to a 28-13 halftime lead. Trailing 4-3 with 4:38 to play in the first quarter Redan went on a 12-2 run to finish the period with Abney hitting a three-pointer and Elmore completing a three-point play in the run. Tucker will compete in the event at Columbia High School.
Columbia High School will play host to the 2012-13 Second Annual Nike Boys’ Basketball Invitational Tournament beginning on Wednesday, Dec. 26. The 16 team field for the tournament includes five state championship teams from four different states, one Final Four entry, three Elite 8 finalists and four teams that reached the playoffs or the second round. Columbia (AAA) and Whitefield Academy (A) are the 2012 state champions from Georgia while Meridian (MS, 6A), Wenonah (AL, 5A) and Bartow (FL, 5A) bring defending state champions from other states. Four 2012 state champions meet at Miller Grove on Saturday.
A state playoff type of atmosphere is expected on Friday night as DeKalb County’s four state champions from 2012 clash in a pair highly anticipated high school basketball games. The Class AAAA state champions Miller Grove Lady Wolverines (6-2) host the Class AAA state champions Columbia Lady Eagles (5-1) at 5:30 p.m. Columbia has won two of the last three Class AAA girls’ state titles and enters at 5-1 after suffering their first loss of the season last Saturday against Buford. The Lady Eagles do have a win over Hoover (AL), a Class AAAAAA school. Miller Grove has a pair of close losses to St. Francis (45-44) and Stephenson (43-40), but has won four consecutive including a tough 52-46 region tussle with 2012 Class AAAA runner-up Southwest …

Twelve DeKalb basketball teams enter tonight’s schedule one win away from a state tournament berth as action in Region 6-AAAA girls’ action and Region 5-AAA boys’ and girls’ play. The Region 6-AAAA girls’ quarterfinals at Miller Grove has five DeKalb teams vying for state tournament berths including a pair facing off against each other in Redan (18-7) and Tucker (20-6) at 5:30 p.m. Redan has a streak of 12 consecutive playoff tournament appearances on the line against the Lady Tigers who defeated the Lady Raiders 51-38 in their only meeting this season. Tucker’s 20 win season is the first since going 20-9 in 2006 and broke a string of four losing seasons, including 10-16 last season. Tucker is looking for its first state tournament berth …

Middle School Basketball Tournaments down to Sweet 16.
The 12th Annual DeKalb County Middle School Basketball Championships are down to the Sweet 16 teams as quarterfinal action begins on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at four sites around the county. There were two upsets in the first round of the boys’ championship as teams got whittled down to the Elite 8. Peachtree (6-9) pulled of a 67-58 upset of Chapel Hill (12-3) on Saturday in one of the upsets while Redan (9-5) upended Chamblee (10-5) 40-29. Division A title winner Champion (13-1) advanced with a 58-16 win over Stephenson (6-10) which had advanced into the first round with a play-in 54-23 win over McNair (2-13).
