Tucker players are in the roster.
Georgia State University is playing host to the 2013 DeKalb County Junior and Senior All-Star Baseball Classics on Tuesday, May 28 at GSU's Baseball Complex next to Panthersville Stadium. The format is different this year as the teams will be split from the East and West sides of the county instead of North and South. The squads will be made up of the top 18 juniors and seniors from each side. The Juniors kick off the new format at 4 p.m. in a single nine inning game in the fifth annual contest. The East will be coached by Arabia Mountain’s Eric Hoxie and assisted by Stephenson’s Marco Jackson. The West squad is led by Columbia’s Steve Dennis and assisted by Chamblee’s Brian Ely. The Tigers came from behind to beat the Osborne Cardinals on Wednesday.
The Tucker Tigers won a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Osborne Cardinals on Wednesday at Hallford Stadium as part of a DeKalb County soccer playoff triple-header. The Region 6-AAAAA No. 2 seeded Tigers found themselves trailing 2-1 with just over seven minutes left in the game and that is when Shadrack Nsukami stepped up to rally his team to victory. “Osborne was a good team,” said Tucker Head Coach Tim Newmyer. “I don’t know how they were just a No. 3 seed. They got out on us and we were kind of in a daze in the first half.” Vital Nizigiyimana crossed the ball into the box to teammate Neo Gaye with seven minutes to play. The 2013 GHSA Soccer State Playoffs kick off on Tuesday, April 30, with 12 DeKalb County teams tapped to play. Girls’ teams from Druid Hills, Lakeside, Dunwoody, Arabia Mountain and Chamblee open on that first day along with the Lakeside boys’ team. Wednesday, May 1 has six DeKalb County boys’ teams set to play including Druid Hills, Dunwoody, Chamblee, Clarkston, Stone Mountain and Tucker. The Druid Hills Lady Red Devils (10-5-1) host Westlake (7-4) in the first round of the Class AAAAAA playoffs in a game set for 6:30 p.m. at Adams Stadium. Local four-star footballer is about to commit - somewhere.
Tucker defensive tackle Elisha Shaw attended Alabama's A-Day spring game over the weekend and came away impressed. Shaw was among a group of elite prospects in Tuscaloosa on Saturday and the experience may well have narrowed his choices. Shaw's video highlights "You just don't see excitement like this at other schools for a spring game," Shaw told AL.com. "Everybody's into it, everybody's supportive of this program all year long. It's really unique." Shaw is rated the nation's No. 2 defensive tackle prospect by the 247Composite rankings and almost committed to Alabama during the visit. Tucker High is hosting the DeKalb County All-Star Games next week.
DeKalb County brought home three high school basketball state championships this winter and some of that exciting talent will be on display during the 2013 DeKalb County Basketball All-Star Games on Thursday, April 4 at Tucker High School. The girls’ game is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. with Druid Hills’ Angela Nash coaching the Nash All-Stars while Towers’ Johnny Toombs faces off with Nash with his All-Stars. Nash’s team is led by Class AAAA Player of the Year Miah Spencer (18.7 pts, 5.7 steals, 3.8 assists) of the Class AAAA state champion Columbia Lady Eagles. DeKalb teams gearing up for region clashes, and it has nothing to do with cityhood.
Week five of the DeKalb County Schools’ baseball season had teams jockeying for position in their respective regions, including six teams that went undefeated as they prepare to meet in key region matchups. Redan led the way in Region 6-AAAA with a 4-0 showing, knocking off Woodstock (1-0) March 19, Banneker (11-0) March 20, Carver (13-3) March 21 and Lithonia (5-2) March 22 to improve to 8-3 overall. The Raiders put together a string of eight consecutive victories after a 0-3 start to the season. The Raiders key region games coming up are Columbia (3/27/13), Chamblee (3/29/13) and Marist (4/1/13). Henderson and Cedar Grove captured the girls’ and boys’ titles on Tuesday.
Cedar Grove and Henderson pulled away on finals day at the 2013 DeKalb County Middle School Track and Field Championships to capture the boys’ and girls’ titles, respectively, at Panthersville Stadium on Tuesday. Cedar Grove held just a four point lead over Chamblee (24-20) after the field events and 1600-meter run finals on Saturday. Rain postponed the meet from Monday to Tuesday and Cedar Grove captured two gold medals and finished in the top three of the individual results in five of the seven events to put up 62 points in winning 86-58 over Chamblee. Four basketball teams make way to state tournament, but Tucker is not among them.
DeKalb County high school basketball teams moved on to the Class AAAAA state playoffs Final Four at the expense of fellow DeKalb teams on Tuesday night. Miller Grove swept a pair of Top 10 match ups at home against fellow DeKalb and Region 6-AAAAA opponent Tucker to pick up two of the Final Four spots. The No. 3 ranked and 2012 Class AAAA state champion Lady Wolverines (25-5) got nine fourth quarter points from senior guard Katie Hunt to rally for a 50-40 victory over the No. 2 ranked Tucker Lady Tigers (25-5). An impressive contingent of seven local teams burst out of the gates to undefeated records in a rainy opening week of baseball action. Martin Luther King Jr. led the way in that group with a perfect 3-0 mark. Coach Richard Gaines and the Lions rolled past Towers (18-0) Feb. 18, Newton County (7-4) Feb. 20 and Riverdale (10-1) Feb. 21 by the combined margin of 35-5.
