Tucker Girl Wins Award at Social Studies Fair

Marley Bridges conducted a study on farmers' markets.

Marley Bridges, a sixth-grader at Tucker Middle School, won a Best in Economics, Class I award at the recent Georgia Social Studies Fair. Her project was titled What are the Economic Effects of Farmers' Markets in Georgia. She used her love of the Tucker Farmers' Market and her time volunteering there for Seth Hancock of Dillwood Farms as inspiration.  Sarah Bridges, Marley's mother, sent Patch the following summary: Marley loves the idea of local people eating local healthy food. Her experience allowed her to talk with customers about the different vegetables Dillwood Farms sold. This included what they tasted like, the different ways you could prepare them and the healthy aspect of eating fresh local grown food. She was also exposed to …

Reminder: Lakeside Cityhood Meeting Monday

Starts at 7 p.m. tonight, and Patch will have live coverage.

Plans for the nearby neighborhood of Lakeside to become a city and the possible annexation of some of Tucker will be discussed at a meeting on Monday evening. Turnout is expected to be high, given the considerable amount of comment and controversy generated in recent days by residents in both factions. The meeting will take place at Tucker Middle School starting at 7 p.m. Commissioner Elaine Boyer and DCSS Interim Superintendent Michael Thurmond will speak, as will representatives of the Lakeside City Alliance, Tucker Civic Association, and Tucker Historical Society. Tucker Civic Association Issues Statement on Lakeside Cityhood

TCA President and Vice-President on what the proposals could mean for our town.

Bruce Penn, President of the Tucker Civic Association, and Beth White Ganga, Vice-President, have released a statement about Lakeside's plans to become a city and the consequences it could have on the Tucker area: Several years ago, the Tucker Civic Association initiated a community-based exploratory group to determine the feasibility of incorporating Tucker into a city. This exploratory group included experts from Georgia Tech. The general findings of the study were that Tucker did not have a sufficient commercial tax base to make cityhood financially feasible without increasing the proposed city limits to include the Northlake area and parts of Brookhaven. Middle School Track Meet Begins Saturday

Panthersville Stadium hosts the county events starting at 10 a.m.

The 2013 DeKalb County Middle School Track Championships begin on Saturday, March 9 at Panthersville Stadium with the field events at 10 a.m. The girls' 1600 meter run finals start at 12 noon and preliminaries for all runnings events follow directly afterwards. The boys' 1600 meter run finals follow the sprint medley relay prelims. The track finals are set for Monday, March 11 at 5 p.m. with the spring medley relay kicking off the final day. Middle School Basketball: Tucker in Elite Eight

Cedar Grove takes on Region B No. 2 seed Tucker on Wednesday.

The 13th Annual DeKalb County Middle School Basketball Championships move into the Elite Eight round on Wednesday, Feb. 6 with a new champion assured in the girls’ tournament. Two-time defending champion Miller Grove which had to win a play-in game against Stone Mountain on Saturday morning was eliminated by Region D No. 1 seed Cedar Grove later that evening to end the Lady Wolverines’ reign as county champions. Cedar Grove moves on to take on Region B No. 2 seed Tucker at Tucker Middle in a 5 p.m. contest on Wednesday. The 2012 runner-up team from Chapel Hill entered at the Region A No. 1 seed and knocked over play-in winner McNair to advance to a 5 p.m. game against Henderson at Redan Middle. Obituary: Taivon Seegers, Student at Tucker Middle School

The seventh grader suffered from a seizure disorder.

Taivon Seegers, known to his friends as "Turtle," died on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013 at the age of 12 after collapsing at his home.  Sources at Tucker Middle School, where Tavion was a seventh grader, said he had suffered a seizure at a school dance a few days before his death and had been treated at a local hospital. After returning home, he took a shower and had another seizure, and died as a result of drowning. Services are entrusted to Gregory B. Levett & Sons Funeral Home at 351 N. Clarendon Avenue in Scottdale. Another TMS student also died last week, in an unrelated incident. Details are forthcomimg.

Parents Arrested After Teenage Girls Fight on Video

Charges of battery and contributing to the delinquency of a minor are pending.

The parents of a Tucker Middle School seventh-grader are facing charges for allegedly encouraging their daughter to fight with another girl at a bus stop after class on Friday.  "It just broke my heart to know that parents would allow this to happen. And for my child to be there with nobody," Quateka Durden told WSB-TV. Durden's daughter was the other girl involved in the fight. Durden said the other student's parents drove their child from the school to the bus stop on Post Oak Drive in order to deliberately start a fight with her daughter. "They followed the bus. We seen (sic) them from behind the bus," she added. Police charged Timothy Taylor and Shequita Cade with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. They also charged Taylor …

Tucker Middle School Getting Lenovo Netbooks

The netbooks will be loaded with all the students' textbooks.

Next fall, Tucker Middle School students will be among more than 8,000 DeKalb County students who will receive their textbooks loaded onto Lenovo netbooks. School Superintendent Dr. Cheryl Atkinson made that announcement in her annual State of the System address on Monday, Dec. 3. Along with Tucker Middle School, students at Cedar Grove, Lithonia, Peachtree, Redan, Stone Mountain and Chamblee will also receive the Lenovo netbooks. While only 38 percent of DeKalb's schools are fully wireless, by the fall, the district will have completed an aggressive technology plan to get make all 138 campuses wireless. The remainder of the district's middle schools and high schools will transition to one-to-one technology in phases through August 2014. …

Tucker Middle Football on the Trail to the Title

The Tucker Middle School Tigers are on their way to the playoffs this weekend.

The 2012 DeKalb County Middle School Football Trail to the Title playoffs begin Oct. 20 with eight teams aiming to move into the second round. Avondale and Adams Stadiums play host to the first round playoff action beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday between teams that did not meet in the regular season. Four games will be played that day. Tucker (3-3) will play Lithonia Middle (4-2) at 10:30 a.m. at Adams Stadium. Other games on Saturday are: Samuel Bryant had 338 yards of total offense to lead the Tucker Tigers to a 44-20 win over the Champion Crusaders on Oct. 13 and help Tucker earn a Trail to the Championship playoff berth. Middle Schools Football: Recap and Preview

Championships in Regions 3 and 4 are on the line this weekend as DeKalb teams fight for the No. 1 seeds heading into the 2012 playoffs in two weeks. Undefeated Peachtree (5-0, 3-0) takes on Columbia (3-1, 2-0) to see who can take that big step towards the Region 3 title and No. 1 seed. Peachtree can sew up the region title with a victory while Columbia could move to within one win of the title by defeating Peachtree. The Miller Grove Wolverines and Stone Mountain Pirates clash in a 10:30 a.m. game at Hallford Stadium for the opportunity to take control of the Region 4 top spot.
