9th and 10th Grade Tucker High Students Honored

The Tucker High School awards ceremony was posted on Youtube.

The awards ceremony for ninth and tenth grade students at Tucker High School was recently posted to Youtube by Play On! Sports Network. The video is attached. Watching the footage may be almost as good as being there: it's 49 minutes long.

Tucker High School's Valedictorian, Salutatorian Named

DeKalb county school district released the names of this year's valedictorians and salutatorians.

  Andrew Melissas is Tucker High School's 2013 valedictorian and Aniya Hamilton is the salutatorian, DeKalb county school district announced Tuesday. Melissas is Georgia Tech-bound and Hamilton will attend University of Georgia, the district said in the announcement. Tucker's graduation is scheduled for May 21, 7 p.m. at The Arena at Gwinnett Center, according to the district's website.      

DeKalb All-Star Baseball Classics Set for May 28

Tucker players are in the roster.

Georgia State University is playing host to the 2013 DeKalb County Junior and Senior All-Star Baseball Classics on Tuesday, May 28 at GSU's Baseball Complex next to Panthersville Stadium. The format is different this year as the teams will be split from the East and West sides of the county instead of North and South. The squads will be made up of the top 18 juniors and seniors from each side. The Juniors kick off the new format at 4 p.m. in a single nine inning game in the fifth annual contest. The East will be coached by Arabia Mountain’s Eric Hoxie and assisted by Stephenson’s Marco Jackson. The West squad is led by Columbia’s Steve Dennis and assisted by Chamblee’s Brian Ely. Burrell Ellis to Present College Scholarships at Fernbank Museum Ceremony

Scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded to 26 DeKalb high school seniors accepted into a two- or four-year college or vocational training program.

Twenty-six DeKalb high school seniors will be presented with college scholarships during the first DeKalb County Education Scholarship Fund Awards Ceremony on Tuesday May 14 at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, the county announced Friday. The scholarships, up to $5,000, will be given to DeKalb county school district seniors accepted into a two or four-year college or vocational training program. DeKalb county CEO Burrell Ellis, the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce and the DeKalb County School District created the DeKalb Education Scholarship Fund, an effort that raised $120,000. Viewfinder: Tucker High School Signing For Academics

The school launched its first annual Academic Signing Day this week.

The storied history of the Tucker High School football program is well known throughout the state of Georgia. Two football State Championships in the last five years is indicative and validation of this notoriety. This week Tucker High School launched its first annual Academic Signing Day. “I would like to thank Principal Jackson, Ms. Branch, Dr. Simpson, Mr. Futrell, and Mr. Carlton for sharing our vision of honoring the students that work as hard in the classroom as our student athletes work on the sports field,” said Beja Turner. Speak Out: Tucker Parent Council Welcomes Michael Thurmond

If you missed it, you can watch the school superintendent's address here.

A man with a lot on his plate, Superintendent Michael Thurmond took some time this week to attend a meeting of the Tucker Parent Council. He spoke at length about the challenges the DeKalb School District is facing and answered many questions. It was revealed during the meeting that Tucker High School will have close to 1,900 students next school year. The building, completed less than a decade ago, is supposed to hold only about 1,600. DeKalb Partners to Award Scholarships

Applications to the Educational Scholarship Fund for high schoolers are being accepted.

DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis, in partnership with the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce and the DeKalb County School District, has established the DeKalb County Educational Scholarship Fund for high school students. The fund will award multiple scholarships in amounts up to $5,000 to DeKalb County School District high school seniors who have been accepted into a two- or four- year college or vocational training program in Georgia. Scholarships will be awarded to students based on their financial need and merit. Students can apply for the scholarship now through April 19, 2013. The application is available here. Basketball All-Star Game Coming Up

Tucker High is hosting the DeKalb County All-Star Games next week.

DeKalb County brought home three high school basketball state championships this winter and some of that exciting talent will be on display during the 2013 DeKalb County Basketball All-Star Games on Thursday, April 4 at Tucker High School. The girls’ game is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. with Druid Hills’ Angela Nash coaching the Nash All-Stars while Towers’ Johnny Toombs faces off with Nash with his All-Stars. Nash’s team is led by Class AAAA Player of the Year Miah Spencer (18.7 pts, 5.7 steals, 3.8 assists) of the Class AAAA state champion Columbia Lady Eagles.
