United Methodist opens an account for donations.
Lawrenceville Road United Methodist in Tucker, known for its community outreach, has established an account to receive donations for the 35 Handy Ace Hardware employees who are without jobs since the tragic fire that totally destroyed the popular Tucker business. Many folks in our congregation are craftsman, hobbyists or do-it-your-self-ers and depended on Handy Ace for just the right part, tool or other items at just the right time - almost on demand. Jim Nall, a church member and regular Ace customer, said “the fact that the employees are well versed in the stock and are helpful in finding the items we all look for saves time and costly mistakes. Many have families and expenses and the loss of their jobs is devastating.” “Anyone who has …

The barbecue joint hosted a hugely successful fundraiser Thursday for Handy Ace employees.
Updated Sunday, Jan 13, 11:27 a.m. In an amazing display of community solidarity, a mass of supporters showed up Thursday at Greater Good Barbecue's fundraiser and raised loads of cash for Handy Ace Hardware employees displaced by the Dec. 28 fire. There was live music, a silent auction, plenty of alcohol and some waits to get served. "This is the bomb," said local resident Carol Garner. "Us Tucker people stick together." As television news crews mingled with swarms of people, restaurant staff bustled about keeping up with demand. Asked if she was OK, co-manager Tracey Wrench replied, "I guess. I left my body a long time ago." Her husband, Bill Wrench, said he was swamped with donations. "People were giving me hundreds all night. It's …

Even a former United States president gets involved.
The Greater Good Barbecue is living up to its name. The big fundraiser is today, Thursday, Jan. 10, benefiting employees of Handy Ace Hardware and their families after the catastrophic fire of Dec. 28. The store's staff lost their jobs when a sudden fire destroyed the entire building and all its merchandise. The owners have vowed to rebuild. A silent auction is also planned and there will be live music from 7 to 10 p.m. Greater Good manager Tracy Wrench told Patch that response so far has been extraordinary and that people keep making donations even before the fundraiser has begun. "One lady called me from Alpharetta asking what she could do," Wrench said. "Someone else came in and just handed me an envelope, said 'good luck' and then left…

Work will begin soon on a new building.
Joe Smith, co-owner of Handy Ace Hardware, has made it official: the store will rise from the ashes after Friday's huge fire. "Yes, we are planning to rebuild, bottom line," said Smith yesterday, speaking to a reporter from CBS Atlanta. An outpouring of support from the Tucker community for the store and its staff has taken Smith by surprise. "What makes our business is our employees. I mean, that's what everyone knows and the community is concerned about, so that's pretty special in itself," said Smith. That spirit was evident again on Wednesday as local restaurants pitched in to feed workers clearing the site. Anita Stoltzfus posted on her Tucker Town Talk Facebook page: "Hats off to the Tucker Community! Positive news in the midst of …

A portion of sales and an auction at Greater Good Barbecue will benefit displaced workers.
The Greater Good Barbecue is hosting a fundraiser on Thursday, Jan. 10 that will benefit employees of Handy Ace Hardware and their families. The store's 35 employees lost their jobs when a sudden fire on Friday night destroyed the entire building and all its merchandise. The owners have yet to say whether they will rebuild the place. "I am a resident of Tucker and am proud to be able to offer a way to help the great staff from the store," said Greater Good's manager Scott Ellenberger. "It may not be enough to make things better, but we hope that we can make someone's day just a little bit brighter." A silent auction is also planned, and Ellenberger is soliciting items from different establishments throughout Tucker. "If you (or someone you…

Within a couple of hours, a 'Tucker institution' came to a dramatic end. We have reaction from residents.
Friday night's massive fire at Handy Ace Hardware obliterated what some are calling a "Tucker institution," and there's no word yet on what caused the blaze or whether the owners plan to rebuild. The business had served the area for five decades, moving three times during that period, and ending up in a handsome, remodelled building with two stories on Cowan Road that was once the Tucker Bowling Alley. "I used to work here when I was knee-high to a grasshopper," said Chris Shiver of Stone Mountain, gazing at the ruins in the cold light of Saturday morning. "It's heartbreaking to see this." Customer Gary Scott was also moved by the spectacle. "We've been coming here forever," he told Patch. "If you needed something, they'd get it for you…

Tuesday's evening rush hour was marred by fire at a recycling plant near I-285.
Updated Thursday, April 12, 11:04 a.m. Two dozen firefighters battled a fierce blaze Tuesday at a business adjacent to I-285 south of LaVista Road, according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution. The fire closed four southbound lanes of the highway during the evening rush hour, creating havoc for motorists because of the intense smoke and poor visibility. CBS Atlanta identified the business as Rock-Tenn Recycling, which is located at 3434 Montreal Industrial Way in Tucker. HERO units were also at the scene of the fire, which started just after 4 p.m. Heavy equipment was used to remove large bales of cardboard boxes which were in danger of igniting, the AJC reported. The reporter on board the CBS Atlanta Sky Eye chopper saw intense flames …
