IRS Announces New 2013 Tax Rates and Standard Deductions

It's tax time again in Tucker and elsewhere. Standard deductions will increase, but the ceiling for itemized deductions decreases in 2013, plus other changes that will affect your taxes this year.

On Friday, the Internal Revenue Service announced annual inflation adjustments for tax year 2013, including the tax rate schedules, and other tax changes from the recently passed American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012.  The tax items for 2013 of greatest interest to most taxpayers include the following changes. Details on these inflation adjustments and others are contained in Revenue Procedure 2013-15, which will be published in Internal Revenue Bulletin 2013-5 on Jan.28, 2013. Other inflation adjusted items were published in October 2012 in Revenue Procedure 2012-41. -News release from the Internal Revenue Service If you have tax questions and need an expert, use the Tucker Patch Directory to locate a CPA or Tax Service near you.

Should Olympians Be Taxed for Medals?

At a 35 percent income rate, bronze medalists will owe the IRS $350, silver medalists will owe $5,385 and top finishers will be liable for $8,986, according to Americans for Tax Reform.

Olympic medals and prize money are both subject to U.S. income taxes. “It’s no different from winning Wheel of Fortune or the lottery," Alex Knight, a tax partner at Atlanta’s Habif, Arogeti & Wynne, told Reuters. A gold medal is worth $650, according to CNN, and could cost athletes up to $236 in taxes. A bronze metal, which is worth $5, could only cost an athlete $2 in taxes The real bite, however, will be taxes taken out of Olympians' cash bonuses. The U.S. Olympic Organizing Committee will award London champions $25,000 for a gold medal, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze, Reuters reports. At a 35 percent income rate, bronze medalists will owe the IRS $350, silver medalists will owe $5,385 and top finishers will be liable for $8,…

Last Chance: 2011 Tax Return Deadline is Tuesday

File your 2011 federal income tax return by April 17 to avoid late penalties and interest.

You still have a few days left to meet the filing deadline for your 2011 federal income tax returns. The tax deadline is traditionally on April 15, but has been pushed back to April 17 this year due to the fact that April 15 is a Sunday and April 16 is Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia. April 17 is also the due date to apply for 2011 tax extensions. The Internal Revenue Service encourages taxpayers to file returns electronically. According to a statement posted on the IRS website, e-file is "the best way to ensure accurate tax returns and get faster refunds." For last minute filing tips, see the IRS video posted above.

Readers' Choice Winner: H&R Block

The location on Hugh Howell Road gets the prize this week in our poll.

This week we asked you to tell us what you thought was the best place in town to get your taxes done at the last minute. The response was not overwhelming - who wants to talk about taxes, right? Still, we do have a winner: H&R Block at 4416 Hugh Howell Road, the one in the Publix shopping center. Congrats! We'll be paying them a visit shortly to pat them on the back and bestow one of our snazzy, framed certificates. Patch HQ promises us they'll be ready very soon. Next week's poll promises to be more fun and engaging. What's the best sporting goods store in the Tucker area? Start thinking about it and prepare to vote starting Monday morning when the survey goes live at 9 a.m. See you then!

Patch Needs Your Help on Taxes

Keep voting in this week's Readers' Choice poll, but help us identify the local businesses that should be listed in next week's poll on best local tax preparers.

Four weeks ago, Tucker Patch introduced Readers' Choice, a weekly poll intended to highlight some of your favorite local businesses. While we've have gotten to know the area well since we launched our site in December 2010, we're the first to admit that we still have a lot to learn. That's why Tucker Patch has a big favor to ask. Keep the votes and comments coming for this week's Readers' Choice poll, but help us identify the local businesses that should be listed in the one for next week. In that poll, we'll ask for your favorite local place to file your taxes at the last minute. Until 5 p.m. Thursday, you can nominate your favorite last-minute tax preparer in the comment box below. You also can let us know via Facebook and Twitter.

Patch Picks: 5 Last Minute Tax Deductions

Monday, April 18 is the last day you can file your income taxes. Check out some deductions that you may not have thought of.

Tucker Patch has some excellent last minute tax tips for you late filers. If you haven’t filed yet, take a look at these five tax deductions that people do not realize they can claim. Education Expenses For teachers, teacher’s aides, or principals who work with students in grades kindergarten through 12th, you may qualify for a deduction if you spend over $250 on books, supplies and computer equipment. If these materials were purchased in 2010, they can all be written off. It would be considered a work-related education expense. Working Deductibles If you are working and have work-related expenses, they can be considered deductibles. If your company has not reimbursed you for work-related items, you should be able to write them off. Here …

AARP Tax Aide Service Continues, Free of Charge

A chat with Helen Lowenthal, district coordinator of AARP Tax Aide.

The AARP Tax Aide volunteering effort is in full swing. I had a chance to write about this service to Tucker residents in an earlier article. These intrepid volunteer tax preparers can be found at the Northlake Branch of the DeKalb Public Library every Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until April 18th. Helen Lowenthal, Tax Aide district coordinator for DeKalb County advises people to not wait that long – March is the least busy month with the shortest wait. Today, I have a chance to document a conversation with Lowenthal as she delves further into the process and recommends folks to take advantage of the March lull to get their finances in order. Lowenthal and other volunteers hope that revisiting this story might motivate people…

Tax Season Relief for Locals

AARP Tax-Aide is a volunteer corporation administered through the AARP Foundation in cooperation with the IRS. Their mission is to help regular people prepare their taxes, free of charge.

For many of us, the prospect of April 15th brings memories of a long-ago Beatles song and a large collective headache:  Should five per cent appear too small, Be thankful I don't take it all. 'Cause I’m the taxman, Yeah, I’m the taxman. But a local group of AARP volunteers happen to love tax season, and they’re ready to share that love with you – in an incredibly generous way. Starting today, Thursday, Feb. 3, at 10:30am, a small army of volunteer tax preparers stand ready to take your W2’s and 1040A’s and transform them, free of charge, into a document that will please the IRS and most likely save you money to boot. From now until tax season closes, Tucker residents can find the AARP Tax Aide volunteers on Mondays and Thursdays at the …
