Nottaway Swimmer Makes Big Splash at National Championships

Gunnar Bentz records Olympic-trial qualifying times in several events and snags the male MVP award.

While most Tucker-area teens were getting ready and starting school, Gunnar Bentz spent the first two weeks of August swimming in Nationals and Junior Nationals in Palo Alto, California, where he made quite a splash. The 15-year-old, who swims summers for Nottaway Swim Club and trains and competes year-round for Dynamo, competed in both the Senior- and Junior-level events, which together made for 11 consecutive days of racing. The first week (August 2-6) was Senior Nationals, which is for Olympians and below. Nine Olympians competed, including Jason Lezak, Katie Hoff, and Garrett Weber-Gale. Tucker Swimmer Sets Two New Records

Several other swimmers from Tucker teams fare well at county meet.

The Tucker-area 15-year-old set two new DeKalb County records last week at the championship meet, when he swam the Boys 18 & Under 100 yard IM (Individual Medley) in 51.90 seconds. That's four laps of the pool, one of each stroke, all in under a minute. Not only that, but a couple hours later, he did it again, setting the new record for Boys 18 & Under 50 Yard Breast Stroke at 26.96 seconds. He also holds another DeKalb County record, from last year, when he swam the 100 IM in the 14 & Under Boys division …
