Tucker Moves Ahead in Boys’ Soccer State Playoffs

The Tigers came from behind to beat the Osborne Cardinals on Wednesday.

The Tucker Tigers won a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Osborne Cardinals on Wednesday at Hallford Stadium as part of a DeKalb County soccer playoff triple-header. The Region 6-AAAAA No. 2 seeded Tigers found themselves trailing 2-1 with just over seven minutes left in the game and that is when Shadrack Nsukami stepped up to rally his team to victory. “Osborne was a good team,” said Tucker Head Coach Tim Newmyer. “I don’t know how they were just a No. 3 seed. They got out on us and we were kind of in a daze in the first half.” Vital Nizigiyimana crossed the ball into the box to teammate Neo Gaye with seven minutes to play. DeKalb Schools Football: Week Seven Highlights

Bulldogs remain undefeated with victory over Redan.

The Chamblee Bulldogs ran their record to 5-0 on the season with a 21-7 victory over the Redan Raiders at North DeKalb Stadium on Friday night. Chamblee under rookie head coach Allen Johnson moved to 5-0 on the season for the first time since their Class AAA playoff semifinal run in 2007. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-0 and held of the Raiders for the win with three rushing touchdowns, including Dezmin Reid’s seventh rushing touchdown of the season. The Raiders were trailing 21-7 in the fourth quarter as they drove to the Chamblee three yard line, but the Bulldog defense rose up and kept Redan (1-4) from scoring. DeKalb Schools Cross Country: Cross Keys Sweeps Season Openers

Tucker had a 1-2 finish as Naima and Nuba Jackson took two top spots.

Despite a two-day delay due to weather the 2012 DeKalb County cross country meet schedule got underway with Cross Keys sweeping the first of two varsity races on Thursday at the Druid Hills Middle School course.   The Indians place five runners in the top 11 finishers led by Juan Garcia’s second place finish overall in a time of 18:46.77 in a 35-51 win over second place Clarkston. Arabia Mountain was third with 65 points followed by Martin Luther King Jr. in fourth with 92 and Stephenson fifth with 116.   Clarkston’s Hussein Sadik ran a time of 18:29.91 to win the individual honors in the race as teammates Leiso Tumbo (19:40.39) and Muhozi Aimable (19:46.54) finished third and fourth, respectively.   Cross Keys got top 10 finishes from …

DeKalb Schools Cross Country: Seven Teams Set for State Meets

The GHSA Cross County State meet takes place on Saturday in Carrollton.

DeKalb County will have a strong contingent at the 2011-12 Georgia High School Association (GHSA) state meet set for Saturday, November 5 at the Carrollton High School Course. Lakeside, Dunwoody and Southwest DeKalb are sending both their boys’ and girls’ teams to compete on Saturday in the Class AAAA state meet. Chamblee’s Maddy Wetterhall qualified as an individual with her Top Six finish at the Region 6-AAAA meet. The Lakeside Vikings hold five state titles, but have not won since 1975 while finishing second seven times and coming in the Top 10 on 29 occasions. The Vikings are led by sophomore Brian Song who finished fourth in the Region 6-AAAA meet with a time of 17:23. The Dunwoody Wildcats won a state title in 1974 and have nine …

Nottaway Swimmer Makes Big Splash at National Championships

Gunnar Bentz records Olympic-trial qualifying times in several events and snags the male MVP award.

While most Tucker-area teens were getting ready and starting school, Gunnar Bentz spent the first two weeks of August swimming in Nationals and Junior Nationals in Palo Alto, California, where he made quite a splash. The 15-year-old, who swims summers for Nottaway Swim Club and trains and competes year-round for Dynamo, competed in both the Senior- and Junior-level events, which together made for 11 consecutive days of racing. The first week (August 2-6) was Senior Nationals, which is for Olympians and below. Nine Olympians competed, including Jason Lezak, Katie Hoff, and Garrett Weber-Gale. I also saw him swim at the county meet. I was sitting in the stands waiting for my son to swim when Gunnar beat the county record for Breast stroke. The crowd's reaction was phenomenal! Very inspiring to all of the little swimmers out there.   more ›

Patch sports reporter Dustin Swedelson shares his most memorable Atlanta sports moments from 2010. Bobby Cox's Final Season Most coaches and managers in today's world don't make it three years. Some don't even last one. Bobby Cox is one of the last of a dying breed. His second and final stint as Braves manager came to an end this year after 20 consecutive seasons with the club (He also managed the Braves from 1978-1981). Cox, who holds the record for most ejections in a career, not only managed the franchise, but also helped assemble it as general manager in the 80s.
