Scoutmob Has Tucker Deals

Six local businesses have deals featured on the popular website.

Scoutmob is all about good deals, and there are currently six Tucker businesses on their website. First up is the Paramount on Idlewood Road, the only independently owned coffee shop in town. "It isn't your typical busy, loud hub besieged by over-caffeinated people. In fact, it's pretty much the exact opposite: comfortable, quiet, almost like your own personal library," according to Scoutmob. Patch staffers use it quite frequently too. Then there is Coco Cabana, a lively Cuban restaurant that opened last year in Northlake. Scoutmob seems to approve: "If you're somehow not convinced by the crisp, sweet plantains, just check Chef Joel's credentials: we hear he's cooked for both the pope and Castro himself. And we have a feeling those …

'Bar Rescue' TV Show Wraps Up Tuesday Night

Reality series finishes filming in Tucker tonight.

The show 'Bar Rescue,' which has been shooting an episode in Tucker for the last three days, will unveil the results of its work on Tuesday night. Barlow's Bar & Grill, at 2845 Mountain Industrial Boulevard, has been undergoing a major makeover under the glare of lights and cameras since Saturday night. That's when a crowd of over a hundred came in to witness what producer Paul Moore called a "stress test," as harried staff prepared cocktails for everyone while show hosts yelled at them to hurry up. There were a few tears. The place is being remodeled as we speak and some of the staff may even still be working there when Tucker residents are invited back at 10:30 p.m. to see the results and watch the final taping. TV Show Filming In Tucker Wants People

A TV crew in town this weekend is looking for a crowd.

A television show called "Bar Rescue" is filming an episode in Tucker this weekend and they're looking for people to come out and take part. We're not allowed to tell you where this is happening just yet, but if you're interested in coming along, you'll need to send an email to get some more details. "The owners don't even know we're coming," producer Paul Moore told Patch. He said the purpose of the show, now in its third season, is to remodel rundown bars over the course of a few days and that it has become a big hit on the Spike TV channel. The Las Vegas Sun called it "reality TV at its best" and quoted host Jon Taffer: “It’s like building a whole new place, so the schedule is relentless. No stone is unturned in my mission to …

I have the best location for a potential bar rescue!!! but even better... dealing with town politics, liquor violations, damaged reputations ignited by local media and the abuse of freedom of speech... egos all around, overabundance of pride, know it all owners/facilitators, language barriers, karma at its finest... you name it, just gets better and better the further you dig! cleanest …   more ›

Moon Shadow Tavern Back in Business

The Tucker bar closed and then changed hands after a fire last summer.

A fire last June shut down the Moon Shadow Tavern in Tucker, but now the local bar and live music venue is once again in business. New owner Wyman Heeden said, "it feels good to be back open.” Known for a variety of live music, the Moon Shadow has a list of bands and events coming up. Regular customers returning after the six-month shutdown will find a newly decorated bar, Keno machines, and pool tables. They serve $5 hot wings on Mondays and Tuesdays, and host Texas Hold 'Em Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 5 p.m. Heeden wants everyone to know that the regular staff is back and “Ron is still cooking.” Last summer's fire only affected the roof of the building, but water and smoke damage was more widespread, and the owner decided to sell …

Beer Growler Brewing on Main Street

If all goes as planned, there will soon be another alcohol vendor in Tucker.

A local businessman has applied to DeKalb County for a license to open a beer growler in Tucker. Laurie Morrison, co-owner of the building at 2323 Main Street, told Tucker Patch that an application has been submitted to the county for part of her premises to be used as a beer dispenser and that it should open by March 2013. "He's started working on the space, but doesn't want to go too far before he gets the go-ahead," Morrison said. She added that it shouldn't be a problem and that the Main Street Tucker Alliance is "all for it." Morrison, who runs the Main Street School of Art, described the applicant as a "family man who's lived in Tucker for ages" and said this will be his first venture in the growing growler trend. Not so long ago, …

Hopefully this means competitive prices and more variety of craft beers. I'm sure the two shops will overlap a bit in offerings, but the competition should be a good thing. One caveat about the excitement over these growler joints opening up...due to the fact that growler stores are essentially distributors and breweries in GA can't pour growlers for sale on premises, a lot of growler beers aren'…   more ›
