Assault rifles should not be banned, private investigator says.
Fong Dong, a customer of Tucker Gun, owns four handguns, a shotgun, and a rifle. So does he object to the proposals President Obama unveiled on Wednesday? Well, yes and no. "With great power comes great responsibility," Dong told Patch outside the store this afternoon. "I know I'm quoting Spiderman, but it's true." Dong, who worked for CBS Atlanta and is now a private investigator, said he is not a member of the NRA because he does not believe in everything they do. "But I am a bit of a collector. I'm interested in weapons for historical reasons. Gunpowder, cannon, all that," he said. He likes to shoot targets, but does not hunt. Assault rifles should not be banned, Dong believes, because a high capacity handgun can be just as deadly. "…

How do we protect our most precious and vulnerable population against unthinkable violence?
I have a message for gun ban advocates and guns rights supporters... Shut Up. Just shut up. Seriously, enough! Stop yelling at each other. Stop posting on Facebook. It's not that your opinions are irrelevant; they aren't, but think about it for a moment... You are part of the huge, knee-jerk movement that has taken attention away from any real lessons that might be taken from the horrible tragedy in Connecticut. Just stop, for a moment, set your own agenda aside, and hear me out for a minute. Please. There is no simple solution here... More guns is not the answer. Fewer guns is not the answer. No amount of weapon legislation would have an impact on Adam Lanza. If he didn't have an AR-15? He still had two pistols. Every teacher in that …

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," the NRA's Wayne LaPierre said.
In an amazing Friday morning press conference in Washington DC, the National Rifle Association broke its week long silence following the horrific shooting of 26 people at a school in Newtown, CT and called for a surge of gun-carrying "good guys" around American schools. NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre called for a new kind of American domestic security revolving around armed civilians, arguing that "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." "We care about our president, so we protect him with armed Secret Service agents," LaPierre said. "Members of Congress work in offices surrounded by Capitol Police officers. Yet, when it comes to our most beloved, innocent, and vulnerable members of the …

Twitter users are also asked to use the hashtag #momentforSandyHook to show their support. Online entities can also visit webmomentofsilence.org for a JavaScript code to automatically darken their site at 9:30 a.m. The website will turn gray and a white box with a green ribbon will appear…

Did you tell your children about the tragedy in Connecticut?
The first thing I did when I read about the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut was weep. The second thing I did was tell myself that I would never let my children, ages 3 and 8, know that something so horrific had happened in the world that they live in. It would be easy for me to shield them from it. We don't have cable and we never watch the news with them in the room. My 8-year-old is very sensitive and we shield him from the many horrors of the world, regardless. I didn't want something so terrifying to even enter his consciousness. The fact the the tragedy happened on Friday gave me the weekend to ruminate on whether or not we should share the news with our sweet boy. It started to sink in that children at his …

This column is designed to offer a platform to discuss national stories on a local level. Share your opinion in the comment section. ---------- The most significant story of the week is clearly the Newtown, Conn., school shooting that took place on Friday. As journalists, we never expect to cover something like this, nor are we ever adequately prepared, even if it's just to write a short summation. All I will say is that my thoughts, prayers and tears are with the families. For in-depth coverage, visit our sister site, Newtown Patch. Find out how to help families affected by the tragedy here. ---------- Did you know that something similar happened in China yesterday, but with a knife? There were no deaths, but the horror is the same. The…

Let me see if I heard the NRA spokeman correctly-what's needed to solve our violence problem is more armed guards? Nothing else? No need to run a background check on everyone who buys a weapon-why bother. Just pick up a "bushmaster" assault rifle at your local gun show and have at it. Too bad about the kids in Connecticut-just the price the general public has to pay for for the freedom to buy our…   more ›
