Both Tucker teams enter the week in the Top 10 rankings as they travel to Dunwoody in Region 6A-AAAA. The Lady Tigers (18-3) are No. 1 in both the polls after a thrilling 46-45 victory over then No. 1 and now No. 2 ranked Stephenson (19-3) at home last week. Tucker and Stephenson split nail biters in Region 6-AAAAA basketball action.
Region 6-AAAAA high school basketball is considered one of the toughest regions in the state and Tuesday’s action at Tucker with both games decided in the final seconds upheld that thought. Tucker’s Tori Robinson drove the lane for the game-winning layup with 1:08 to play as the No. 2 ranked Lady Tigers upended the No. 1 ranked Stephenson Lady Jaguars 46-45 in girls’ play. Kerry Watson had given Stephenson a 45-44 advantage by scoring on a steal and a three-point shot to rally the Lady Jaguars (18-3) from a 44-40 deficit to the one-point lead with 3:47 to play. Perennial boys’ state playoff teams Tucker and Columbia meet in a preseason contest this week.
Four reigning state champions and 34 other DeKalb basketball teams begin their 2012-13 basketball seasons this week as they look toward state playoff berths in February. Three DeKalb schools will host on Tuesday as Clarkston goes to Druid Hills, Lakeside to Cedar Grove and Southwest DeKalb entertains Wesleyan. All the games are set for 5:30 and 7 p.m. with the girls playing first at each site. Arabia Mountain travels to Tri-Cities and Stephenson goes to North Clayton to round out the Tuesday schedule. Congratulations to the Lady Tigers Varsity Football/Competition Cheerleaders for placing second in the Regional Cheerleading championship that was held at Loganville High School last Saturday.
