Tucker Civic Association Issues Statement on Lakeside Cityhood

TCA President and Vice-President on what the proposals could mean for our town.

Bruce Penn, President of the Tucker Civic Association, and Beth White Ganga, Vice-President, have released a statement about Lakeside's plans to become a city and the consequences it could have on the Tucker area: Several years ago, the Tucker Civic Association initiated a community-based exploratory group to determine the feasibility of incorporating Tucker into a city. This exploratory group included experts from Georgia Tech. The general findings of the study were that Tucker did not have a sufficient commercial tax base to make cityhood financially feasible without increasing the proposed city limits to include the Northlake area and parts of Brookhaven. The Tucker Community was not willing to "land grab" into other areas, choosing to …

Treasure Hunting in Henderson Park

Second annual Great Henderson Hunt is on March 3.

The date for the second annual Great Henderson Hunt is March 3, happening from 2 to 4 p.m. at, where else, Henderson Park in Tucker.  Like last year's wildlife treasure hunt, teams will be given a map and a list of clues, and they will then set off on the wooden trails to find hidden "treasures" representing the diversity of wildlife in Henderson Park.   This year, teams should expect a few more surprises on the way to the finish line. The Friends of Henderson Park is gearing up for this year's hunt and collecting some fabulous prizes for the winning teams. Register here and see photos from last year's hunt.

Henderson Park Treasure Hunt a Huge Success

Fundraiser for Friends of Henderson Park brings together families and friends, young and old.

It was a bright, crispy, cold Sunday afternoon in Tucker as parents, grandparents, and kids gathered around the playground in Henderson Park, awaiting their instructions. You could feel the anticipation in the air. After receiving their clues and maps, it was READY, SET, GO for these 80 participants in the Great Henderson Hunt - Henderson Park's 1st Annual Treasure Hunt. Twenty-five teams raced to the finish line to win prizes donated by local Tucker businesses. Local 7 donated three $50 gift certificates, Stars and Strikes donated a family fun pack worth $60 plus two $25 game cards. Movie Tavern donated two movie passes, Mellow Mushroom donated three $10 gift certificates, and Monkey Joe’s donated four passes worth $10 each. “It was a …

Henderson Park Gets a Face Lift

Implementing a master plan is never a pretty sight.

If you haven’t driven down Henderson Road lately, you may not recognize the park area just west of the Henderson Park soccer fields. We Tucker park enthusiasts were thrilled a year and a half ago when the Henderson Park Community Garden broke ground on the empty, County-owned lot adjacent to where the Tucker Youth Soccer Association (TYSA) hosts many of their games and practices. From sunflowers to scarecrows, it’s always refreshing to drive by and witness the community garden grow and change season to season. Over the past few months, I have been taking photos occasionally of the upgrades and changes to the seven acre expansion lot DeKalb County has been developing. (See photos) The park has new covered picnic areas, new walking trails …

The paths are actually asphalt and concrete (cement is an adhesive). A playground is actually planned for the park based on the master plan but it was not able to be implemented in this phase due to budget constraints. I am very pleased with how the park is looking and it appears a lot of people are - the park construction isn't even complete and a lot of people are already using the walking …   more ›

Trailer Released for 'The Odd Life of Timothy Green'

The movie starring Jennifer Garner, which shot in Henderson Park and other parts nearby, is set to be released next August.

Remember when Jennifer Garner was traipsing about Decatur in March, shooting her next movie, The Odd Life of Timothy Green? (It shot some in Henderson Park too.) The Disney movie looks pretty fantastical. The Odd Life is about a childless couple unable to conceive that buries a box in their backyard, containing their wishes for an infant. When their child is born, however, Timothy Green isn't all that he appears. In addition to Garner the film stars Joel Edgerton, a rising Australian actor with a recent role in the small Oscar-nominated film Animal Kingdom, and Ron Livingston (Office Space). The movie is directed by Peter Hedges, known for his two other films Dan in Real Life and Pieces of April and his novel, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, …
