The Week Ahead: Education, Cityhood, Goodwill, and Tucker Day

Five things to know about.

The DeKalb Board of Education will hold the following meetings on Monday, May 6: 2 p.m. Work Session; 3 p.m. Committee of the Whole; 4 p.m. Executive Session for a student appeal and a legal matter; 5:45 p.m. Community Meeting for Public Comments; 7 p.m. Business Meeting. All will take place at BOE HQ, 1701 Mountain Industrial Boulevard in Stone Mountain. DeKalb Delegation's Cityhood Town Hall Meeting is Monday, May 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Clairmont Hills Baptist Church, 1995 Clairmont Drive, Decatur. From May 6–10, Goodwill of North Georgia will host a variety of events, including job fairs and employment workshops at its career centers, giveaways for donors and shoppers and drawings for Goodwill gift cards. Goodwill's Tips for De-Cluttering Before Year’s End

Seven items you can donate to help save space and perhaps earn a tax deduction.

by Elaine Armstrong Taxpayers looking to claim a deduction for charitable donations only have 10 days left to give before the end of the 2012 tax year. Goodwill of North Georgia is preparing for what will be its busiest donation rush of the year. We always receive our heaviest volume of donations from Dec. 26 to Dec. 31. Last year we received more than 87,000 donations during the last week of the year. The organization has more than 100 locations where you can drop off items. Making a donation can help families de-clutter items they’ve accumulated during the year and make room for new things they received for Christmas. Time Running Out For 2012 Tax Deductible Donations

Just a few days left to take advantage of a tax deduction by donating to Goodwill.

Dec. 31 is the last day that donations can be applied to the current tax year so these next few days are a good time to see what you have to donate to Goodwill. At this time of the year, Goodwill of North Georgia is usually gearing up for what is traditionally their busiest week of the year. "Last year, we received more than 87,000 donations during the last week of the year and more than 28,000 on Dec. 31," said Elaine Armstrong, director of public relations for Goodwill of North Georgia. "People across North Georgia have continued to generously donate throughout the year, and we are hoping for another successful year-end.
