A family venture started in The Bronx turns into a nationwide success with more than 100 locations.

In 1989, when the Hawthorne family started a little food business below a TV repair shop in The Bronx, NY, they had no idea that their dream would morph into a nationwide enterprise. Jamaican-born entrepreneur Lowell Hawthorne, his wife Lorna, four of his siblings and their spouses, pooled their funds to open that first Golden Krust retail spot. By 1996, the family owned 17 restaurants through New York City. That same year, Golden Krust became the first Caribbean-owned business in the United States to be granted a franchise license, and today there are more than 100 locations in nine states, according to the company website.
