Shortly after reading this article on Wednesday 17, 2013 (Wednesday) morning, I called Meadowbrook facility and ask for Ms. Sam. I was transferred to her voice mail box and left a message regarding the items that she was in need of the most at present time. Here we are Friday morning at noon time, there has been no return call received from Ms. Sam. I do question how much of item needs that …   more ›

After The Fire: Locals Lament Loss

Within a couple of hours, a 'Tucker institution' came to a dramatic end. We have reaction from residents.

Friday night's massive fire at Handy Ace Hardware obliterated what some are calling a "Tucker institution," and there's no word yet on what caused the blaze or whether the owners plan to rebuild.  The business had served the area for five decades, moving three times during that period, and ending up in a handsome, remodelled building with two stories on Cowan Road that was once the Tucker Bowling Alley.  "I used to work here when I was knee-high to a grasshopper," said Chris Shiver of Stone Mountain, gazing at the ruins in the cold light of Saturday morning. "It's heartbreaking to see this." Customer Gary Scott was also moved by the spectacle. "We've been coming here forever," he told Patch. "If you needed something, they'd get it for you…

Hardware Store Burns to the Ground

Friday night blaze destroys Handy Ace Hardware on Cowan Road.

A sudden and devastating fire on Friday evening completely destroyed the two-story building that only recently became the new home of Handy Ace Hardware, a long-time Tucker mainstay. No injuries have been reported, and the store had closed for the day an hour before the fire started. Fire crews were called shortly after 7 p.m. to 4365 Cowan Road and were still battling the fierce blaze two hours later. Onlookers watched as the large structure slowly collapsed amid raging flames, billowing smoke and multiple explosions caused by ammunition and combustible gases.   Jon Howell, a neighbor who lives in a nearby apartment complex, told Patch that propane tanks in front of the building had exploded. "The first thing I heard were three loud bangs…

"Act of nature" displaces three adults.

Firefighters were summoned to a Tucker residence this evening after an apparent lightning strike started a fire, according to a Gwinnett County official.  A 911 caller said his house in the 300 block of Braxton Place had been hit by lightning. Crews found the roof and attic fully engulfed upon arrival. No injuries have been reported but three adult residents were displaced by the fire.
