New Facebook Graph Search: How To Protect Privacy

The powerful social network launches a new feature.

In the latest evolution of Facebook, the powerful social network announced Graph Search, the capability to show users information from their Facebook network. Also, the new tool has business capabilities. According to the Los Angeles Times, users can search for things like "movies liked by my friends" or "photos of me and (name of friend)." But for all other queries, Microsoft-owned Bing search engine will handle the results. So when users search for something such as "Jay-Z concerts 2012," Facebook will pass off the search to Bing. Users then will see Bing's results on the left, and information from Facebook on the right. Users also will see Bing ads in both columns. The launch is still in beta mode, and users have to sign up for a …

Turning the Screen Off

Disconnecting from social media helped me reconnect with my children.

Being a Stay-at-home Mom can feel isolating, especially if you have young children at home with you. There was a time, when my youngest was a baby and my other son was no bigger than a grasshopper's hind leg, that I felt alone in a sea of diapers and burp cloths. The days would drag on between naps and nursing and I needed a network of people that I could reach out to. Enter Facebook. Social media became a lifeline for me at a time when I needed a connection. Between finding friends from my past, new friends, and eventually blogging friends, I felt a sense of community whenever I logged in. At first I only checked in when the kids were napping. Grabbing a handful of minutes to read everyone's updates to get a sense that I was an active …

Social Media: Divided by the Sexes

Breaking down the demographics of Social Media usage.

Almost 150 million Americans now use at least one social networking site, according to MediaBistro’s Shea Bennett. Women “check-in” much more than men – almost 100 million more visits per month! It’s probably no surprise that Pinterest is predominantly female, but according to the AllTwitter post, 64% of Twitter users are women who lead in log-ins with 58% of Facebook and 60% of social gamers. “Men lead the way on Reddit (84 percent), Google+ (71 percent) and LinkedIn (63 percent)." There are more men on LinkedIn than there are women who use LinkedIn, Reddit and Google+ combined. A few more interesting facts: Online MBA brings perspective to other aspects of the demographics of social media users in their celestial illustration that shows…

Your New Email: You@Facebook.com

Did you know that Facebook has changed your info? Yes, you now have a facebook.com address.

In an apparent attempt to spur greater use of its messaging service, Facebook has changed the default email accounts of all its users to facebook.com email addresses, NPR and Forbes reported Monday. Facebook launched its email-compatible messaging service, which assigned all account holders new Facebook email addresses, in November 2010. Though expected in some corners to establish Facebook as a major player in the free email market—employees reportedly referred to the new messaging system as "the GMail killer" when it was launched—the Wall Street Journal notes that providers such as Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft continue to dominate the space. What happens when external email comes to your Facebook.com account? Emails sent to your facebook…

FB Page Created for Boys Killed in Boating Accident

Michael Prince Sr., the victims' grandfather, relates details of the Lake Lanier boat crash.

A memorial Facebook page has been set up for Jake and Griffin Prince, the Buford youths who were victims of this week's boating crash on Lake Lanier. Jake, 9, was killed in Monday's collision, and Griffin, 13, still is missing. Diving teams have been searching for his body since the collision occurred. As of 4:20 p.m., the Facebook page already has accumulated more than 1,600 likes, in addition to many comments and photo uploads. Michael Prince Sr., the boys' grandfather, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that a party led by his son, Michael Prince Jr., was aboard a pontoon boat on Lake Lanier when the collision occurred.  "They were on their way home," Prince said.  The force of the collision sent all 13 on board into the waters of …

Facebook Stock Falls on Second Day of Trading

So where are Facebook's friends now?

If you didn't rush to buy Facebook stock on Friday, you probably made a good decision. After its IPO of $38.00, the Menlo-Calif. based company's stocks prices have taken a tumble falling $3.97 to $34.26 in late afternoon trading. Earlier in the day the stock had dropped as low as $33. That doesn't sound like much, but it translates to a loss of "nearly $10 billion of its market value, and is now worth around $96 billion, about $2 billion below Amazon.com Inc.," according to an article in the Boston Globe. "There must have been some sober second thoughts about this," said Brian Wieser, an analyst at Pivotal Research Group on the drop in share price. The analyst thinks the $38 per share was too expensive given Facebook's unproven advertising…
