Tucker CID Is DeKalb’s Newest Community Improvement District

A CID is a self-taxing district that uses additional property tax dollars to make transportation and infrastructure improvements.

After working several months on the project, volunteers with the Tucker Community Improvement District (CID) Formation Committee cheered when the DeKalb Board of Commissioners unanimously approved DeKalb’s third CID in the Tucker area. “I can’t express how pleased I am with all of the people who came together to make this possible,” said Honey Van De Kreke, co-manager of the Main Street Tucker Alliance and the Tucker CID Formation Committee. “This is the third CID in DeKalb and to my knowledge the only one formed totally by volunteers.”   “After the success of the Tucker LCI and the Tucker Overlay District, there is now a funding mechanism that can improve the area such as accelerating transportation and infrastructure improvement projects…

Lakeside Alliance Files Cityhood Bill

The placeholder bill, submitted Monday by Dunwoody state Sen. Fran Millar, excises a large portion of Tucker from the Lakeside City Alliance's previous map.

The Lakeside City Alliance finally had its own placeholder cityhood bill submitted to the state legislature Monday, but it arrives with one significant change – it's got less Tucker in it. The alliance announced the bill's filing at a contentious cityhood meeting hosted by DeKalb County Commissioner Elaine Boyer at Tucker Middle School on Monday evening. Dunwoody state Sen. Fran Millar filed the bill hours after Decatur state Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver filed another placeholder cityhood bill dedicated to residents of the Druid Hills and Briarcliff areas. But the Lakeside City Alliance's new map excises much of Tucker from the proposal, including the Main Street Tucker area that was previously part of it. The alliance's last map included a …

If the TPC had Smoke Rise parents in attendance they would have heard that Smoke Rise currently has about 600 students and it is on the schedule to be torn down and rebuilt for 600 students. So, where are they planning on putting the Livsey kids? In trailers like they have the refugee students at Livsey now? If you were a parent and bought your house in the Livsey district because you heard it …   more ›

Lakeside Alliance: Cityhood Bill to Be Filed This Week

The "placeholder" bill would not be considered until next year, Lakeside City Alliance organizers have said.

A bill that would officially start the two-year process of creating a new city around the Lakeside High School area will be filed this week, the Lakeside City Alliance said Tuesday. The bill, to be filed by Dunwoody state Sen. Fran Millar, will act as a "placeholder" bill and could not be considered by the legislature until next year, said Mary Kay Woodworth, chairman of the alliance, which is studying the creation of a new city of 60,000 residents that would reach from North Druid Hills to western Tucker. Any cityhood bill is required to be filed by a legislator from the proposed city, and Millar's District 40 reaches into the Henderson Mill area and western Tucker, both of which would be part of a city of Lakeside. The bill could be …

My question is why do they want to create a "Lakeside City"? What is to be gained by doing so? What is to be gained by being incorporated? Now they will have stars upon their bellies and be the best Sneetches on the beaches?   more ›

No Tax Increase in DeKalb Board's Approved $559M Budget

The board passed the budget unanimously Tuesday.

The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to approve a $559 million county budget for 2013 that includes no tax increase. The budget is a reduction of county CEO Burrell Ellis' proposed $565 million budget that would have raised taxes by .64 mills or about $20 on a $200,000 home. Jeff Rader, Elaine Boyer and Kathie Gannon, all of whom represent portions of Brookhaven, Chamblee Dunwoody and north Atlanta on the board of commissioners, voted to approve the budget. The budget restores $900,000 for the county's understaffed permitting and licensing system, which has been subject to significant budgetary slashing over the last several years as county construction and development waned in a sagging economy. That money was removed …

Does DeKalb Still Need a CEO?

District 1 Commissioner Elaine Boyer says absolutely not.

The position of county CEO has for years been on shaky ground in DeKalb County.  Sitting CEO Burrell Ellis has faced questions about the position's necessity in the past and successfully fended them off.  But after the district attorney raided Ellis' home as part of an investigation into the county's watershed operations last month, local media and elected officials have questioned whether it might be worth pushing to eliminate the position once and for all. DeKalb County District 1 Commissioner Elaine Boyer, a frequent critic of the CEO position, said she still supported its elimination Tuesday.  "This form of government doesn't work," she said. "I'm in my 21st year [as a commissioner], it does not work. We're not the federal government. …

The effort to eliminate the CEO position is nothing but a power grab by the Commissioners. Imagine a Manager under a system controlled by the current bunch of corrupt BOC. The CEO position is County wide elected position. We all have a say in who gets elected. The democratic process allows us to vote that person out of office if we so desire   more ›

Henderson Park Undergoing Changes

Master Plan differs greatly from what public asked for and expected.

A group of Tucker residents who are affiliated with the Henderson Park Community Garden (HPCG) and Tucker Youth Soccer Association (TYSA) were surprised and saddened last month when they obtained copies of construction plans for the 6.7-acre parcel of Henderson Park that consists of the two former residential lots at 2723 and 2731 Henderson Road. Beginning in late 2009, public input meetings were held regarding the plan for this part of the park, and a master plan was developed and voted on with unanimous approval.  However, it seems that later, after the vote, changes were made to the plan, and many HPCG and TYSA advocates aren't pleased. Susan Farrar, co-president of HPCG, provided documents explaining the original plan, the changes to …

Thanks you for posting this article! I was amazed that the county would hold numerous meetings to get input from the community - only to bluntly ignore the input a few months later. The garden has been a beautiful addition to the park. The original proposal voted on by the community adds to this beautification. But the new proposal creates a concrete jungle out of our green space and that is …   more ›
