Are Local Police Doing a Good Job?

A survey is being conducted to discover the effectiveness of DeKalb police.

The DeKalb County Police Department is conducting a survey of its citizens to gather impressions about county police services and how well they do their job. “Public Safety continues to be the county’s top priority,” said CEO Ellis in a statement. “I encourage all DeKalb residents to take the survey and provide the county with the information we need to plan for the future and preserve the safety of our county.” The image of the county's police took a hit last month when two officers assigned to the Tucker Precinct were arrested and charged with corruption. Citizen Police Academy Seeking Applicants

Applications are being accepted for a course at Police Headquarters in Tucker.

The DeKalb County Police Department is seeking applicants to fill its April 2013 Citizen Police Academy. The Academy is a free 10-week course. Participants will meet one night a week for two-hour sessions at DeKalb County Police Headquarters in Tucker. During the sessions, personnel from various units including Uniform, Criminal Investigations and Special Operations Divisions will teach participants about the complexities and operational structure of their respective units. It is the Department’s aim to have the Citizen Police Academy provide participants an insider’s view of law enforcement. Ultimately, this new understanding will assist in building and nurturing stronger relationships between the community and the DeKalb County Police …

Woman Bites Man, Gets Arrested

The woman's twin sister called police after roadway incident involving drug use.

A woman bit her husband on the arm while he was driving and ended up being arrested for battery and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to an incident report from DeKalb County Police.  Kerri Gunter, 28, of Allenwood Way in Tucker, was taken into custody in the early hours of Jan. 6 at the QuikTrip on Mountain Industrial Boulevard. Her twin sister told police that Gunter had been "shooting up Roxy* in the car" and had bitten her husband on the right forearm as he drove. The incident started at Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Lawrenceville Highway as the trio were heading east in the man's 2001 Hyundai Accent. The couple had been arguing and Gunter's sister, sitting in the back seat, called 911 on her cell phone as the situation got out …

More Car Break-Ins at Idlewood Acres

Cars in one driveway have been ransacked three times in the last month.

A single mother with two children in Tucker's Idlewood Acres neighborhood is reporting that thieves have broken into cars in her driveway for the third time in the past month.  "My boyfriend's car was pulled apart last night by what seems to be the same people who went through both of our cars twice within two weeks, a month ago,' Gina Edmonds told Tucker Patch. "A month ago, his new IPOD I gave him was taken; however, they opted not to take my old one," she said. Patch reported on a slew of car break-ins last month in various Idlewood Neighborhoods. The thieves seemed particularly interested in electronic devices, as they do in these cases. Edmonds reports that her neighbor witnessed an attack a month ago. "He walked out right as they …

Last Chance: Volunteer for 'Beat The Badge'

The 5K Run on Saturday benefits the DeKalb Police Alliance.

Volunteers are needed for Saturday's Beat the Badge event, benefiting the DeKalb Police Alliance, a non-profit organization which provides all uniformed police officers in DeKalb County with a $100,000 life insurance policy. The policy covers officers killed in the line of duty and has helped two families of slain officers to date. Citizen Police Academy Graduation Wednesday

Forty-five community members to receive honor.

The DeKalb County Police Department will recognize its recent graduates of the Citizen Police Academy during a graduation ceremony. Forty-five participants will be presented certificates for completing the free 11-week course, which was conducted at police headqurters in Tucker.  The ceremony is tonight, Wednesday, August 29 at 7 p.m. at the Maloof Auditorium, 1300 Commerce Drive in Decatur. During the program, officers from various units provided citizen academy attendees an inside perspective about the complexities and operational structure of the Department. Instruction included presentations and demonstrations from Uniform Patrol, Special Operations and Criminal Investigation Divisions.  It’s the aim of the program to assist in …

DeKalb Police Hosting 'Beat the Badge' Run

Proceeds from the 5K event in Tucker benefit the DeKalb Police Alliance.

The DeKalb County Police Department is hosting the second annual Beat the Badge 5K Run on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 9 a.m.  Registration starts at 7:30 a.m and costs $25 ($15 for kids 12 and under) or participants can register online. The starting point of the run, which is a Peachtree Road Race qualifier, will be at DeKalb County Police Headquarters at 1960 West Exchange Place in Tucker. All proceeds from the event benefit the DeKalb Police Alliance which provides life insurance for officers and support for families who have lost loved ones in the line of duty.
