A Fiscal Cliff Bungee-Jump

House Republicans have stalled every attempt to address our underfunded obligations.

After briefly slipping of the “fiscal cliff” earlier this week, you’d think Congress would be ready to come to terms with the fact that we have got to do something about our unfunded obligations on our debt.  House Republicans, many of whom answer to gerrymandered districts, have stalled and hawed against every attempt by both moderate Republicans and Democrats to address our underfunded obligations. This weekend saw the House do the same 11th hour “deal” that solves nothing and sets the stage for an 11th hour deal on the debt ceiling. That will repeat the cycle of politicians being unwilling to address the serious issues facing our economy. The Bush tax cuts have been largely preserved for 98% of Americans. Tax holidays such as the Social…

Growing Our Small Businesses, One Gift at a Time

Drop in a local store and you might find a place to frequent for years to come.

As the Holiday season commences and with three weeks left until Christmas, odds are you are desperately trying to wrap up last minute shopping. Hitting up Amazon, Wal-Mart and other big-box retailers has become a holiday tradition in its own right. Another contender has risen up from obscurity in the last few years though, ready to reclaim its preeminent place in the American shopping hierarchy: your local small business. This juggernaut is ready to fight tooth and nail for every dollar spent this holiday season and there are some compelling reasons to support it. Local small businesses were the backbone of daily life and our communities for many decades. Even today, small businesses account for roughly two thirds of new job creation in …

The DNC: A Path Forward

While the RNC served as a last ditch attempt to unify the base, the DNC took a unified base and molded it into an effective force, says Tucker senator Curt Thompson.

President Obama had a high bar set for his speech at the Democratic National Convention last week. Rousing speakers at both the RNC and DNC had given the public their fill of oratory over the last two weeks, and after Bill Clinton’s excellent speech (even Republicans across the aisle gave begrudging respect to Clinton’s commanding presence), Americans were expecting President Obama to come out strong. Pundits were calling it one of the most important speeches he’d have to give. While that may have been an exaggeration, President Obama’s speech was still a pivotal event in the campaign dialogue and his bid for re-election. The speech carried with it both the motivational prose that made the President famous four years earlier while also …

Senator Thompson Cancels Obama Watch Party

Curt Thompson cancels Democratic Convention event at his Tucker home.

A "watch party" at the home of Senator Curt Thompson celebrating President Obama's nomination has been cancelled. The event was to have taken place this Thursday, Sept. 6 in Tucker to coincide with the final night of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC. Thompson sent an email to supporters that said: "I apologize profusely, but I must cancel the viewing party I intended to host for the Democratic National Convention on Sept. 6. In my rush to get the party scheduled I missed the fact that I had a prior commitment on my schedule. I just wanted to send you all a more personalized email so that I could express my apologies. I greatly value your support and friendship, and hope that I don't find myself having to cancel another …

All Politics Is Global

Senator from Tucker writes about the economic crisis facing the European Union and its effects on the U.S.

Late House Speaker Tip O’Neil’s adage that “all politics is local,” while still true, seems to have an inversion that has become increasingly important, “all politics is global.” In the day where revolutions can be coordinated via social media and 24-hour news cycles need “news” to fill the entirely of their schedule, it’s hard to escape the news of the economic crisis facing the European Union. As the world has become smaller, flatter, and hotter (to paraphrase Milton Friedman), the global economy has come around to where elections in Greece actually do affect stock markets in New York and vice versa. There’s no way around it. The economic issues that are affecting the entire EU have become not just part of the daily news cycle, they are …

Moving Past Affordable Care Act Drama

The work of deciphering exactly what the decision means for American law begins now.

Last week’s ruling on President Obama’s Affordable Care Act was the full package. There were policy implications to be decided for the wonks, political implications to be analyzed for the consultants, and, of course, presidential election drama for the pundits to react to. In whichever part of the political process that you enjoy the most, something big was happening. However, now that it’s come and gone, the decision is over, but the emotions remain. There’s no need to comment on the various dramas of the day. CNN’s failed reporting in the first 10 minutes was only a symptom, not the actual problem. And Justice Robert’s alleged switch doesn’t make him a secret liberal or the new swing vote. Two points make a line, and until he speaks for …

On Immigration, Politics Is Different from Principle

The Senator from Tucker writes about the DREAM Act.

President Barack Obama’s recently announced Homeland Security Directive, aimed at young immigrants, has reframed the entire Presidential campaign as June draws to a close. The essence of the order means that, if they meet the directive’s criteria, DREAMers (as they’re called in reference to the DREAM act) would not be deported, and instead would have the opportunity to apply for a two-year work permit potentially allowing them to work, drive, and go to college here in the U.S. As a longtime supporter of realistic, rational, and comprehensive immigration reform, I’m both glad at the announcement and encouraged that the President has finally come to terms with the fact that the same Republicans who insist he work with them on this issue have…

What's Really a Gaffe?

Senator Curt Thompson (D-Tucker) on why slips of the tongue aren't always what they seem.

Webster’s dictionary defines a gaffe as “a social or diplomatic blunder,’ but I prefer the definition journalist Michael Kinsley gave it: “A gaffe is when a politician tells the truth – some obvious truth he isn’t supposed to say.” In my opinion, the former definition is distinctly different than the latter. After all, the first scenario is usually a result from what any national-level politician has to deal with during campaign season: fatigue from campaigning at a strenuous pace for months on end. The second happens when a politician manages to say what they actually think, even when they and their handlers know they shouldn’t because it would hurt their campaign. The problem is that both sorts of gaffe can quickly get a campaign off …

Whatever Happened to the Moderates?

State Senator Curt Thompson (D-Tucker) says losing the political center would be a great blow to American politics.

It’s a legitimate question: Where did all the moderates go? And by moderates, I don’t mean the folks that every presidential campaign under the sun is going to be trying to court this year. Actually, the number of independent and moderate voters in America is on the rise and that’s probably happening, in part, due to the issues that I’d like to discuss here today. No, I’m talking about moderate politicians. Last week’s announcement by Sen. Olympia Snowe that she was not seeking reelection this year have made me reassess how fast the political center is vanishing in legislatures across this country. This isn’t just a GOP issue either, because moderate Democrats like Ben Nelson and Democratic independent Joe Lieberman have fallen by the …

Fair point, Sen. Thompson. Some would argue that the swinging pendulum ultimately brings its own balance, but we certainly have to speak up to make it swing. I won't claim to be an authority on history in politics, but it does feel like we require more polarization than ever from our politicians. As you mentioned, more and more people are becoming disenfranchised with the conventional party …   more ›
