Cross Country club rallies in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings.
The Livsey Cross Country club showed its support for the people of Boston this week. More than 90 Livsey Elementary School students are involved in the Cross Country club. They are known as the Livsey Leopards and the club is run by parent and teacher volunteers. The Leopards have been active at Livsey since 2009. For the past three years, Livsey runners have participated in the Tucker Road Race, winning the award for highest group participation each year, as well as several age group awards. Tucker's Class AAAAA Girls Team running Saturday at 1:45 p.m. in Carrollton.
All seven runners for both the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams from Druid Hills finished in the top 20 on the way to a sweep of the team titles at the Region 2-AAAAAA Cross Country Championships at Luella High School last Saturday. The Red Devils captured the boys’ title 30-38 over Newton as five runners finished in the top 10 led by Daniel Samuel (16:58.05) and Ray Lumb (17:13.66) in second and third overall, respectively. Omar Serguus was sixth in 17:45.18 while Joel Medford (17:59.27) and Max Atkinson (18:00.49) were ninth and tenth. Kennary Blackshear was 15th overall with a time of 18:26.21 and Arjun Narker was 20th in 19:16.20 to round out the boys’ squad. Lady Tigers earned a berth in the Class AAAAA meet in Carrollton on Nov. 10.
Top 10 finishes from Naima and Nuba Jackson fueled a Region 6-AAAAA fourth place finish by the Tucker Lady Tigers and earned a berth in the Class AAAAA state cross country meet in Carrollton this month. It is the first team state meet berth for the Lady Tigers since the late 1980s. Tucker’s Tracey Harrell finished third in the 1988 and 1989 Class AAA state meets. Naima Jackson was sixth overall in the Region 6-AAAAA individual results with a time of 20:16.13 and Nuba Jackson was ninth in a time of 21:09.64 in leading the Lady Tigers past Southwest DeKalb (111-125) to claim the final state meet berth. Nadia Lee finished 30th overall in a time of 24.22.66, Nuri Lee was 33rd in 25:26.90 and Sharik Jones was 36th to round out the scoring…

The 2012 DeKalb County Varsity Cross Country Championships take place this afternoon.
The 2012 DeKalb County Varsity Cross Country Championships are today (Tuesday, Oct. 9) at the Druid Hills Middle School Course. The boys' race begins at 5:15 p.m. with the girls' to follow at 5:45. The Lakeside Vikings have won 17 consecutive titles since tying Stone Mountain in 1995. The Lady Vikings won the 2011 title breaking a two-year reign by Dunwoody. The 2011 individual champions of Nahome Abera of Stone Mountain and junior Alex Cameron of Dunwoody return to defend their titles. Cameron has won the past two girls' titles. DeKalb's JV Cross Country Championships run today, Oct. 4, at Druid Hills Middle School.
The 2012 DeKalb County Cross Country Championships are set for Tuesday, Oct. 9 and teams had their last tune up at Arabia Mountain on Tuesday of this week. Lakeside dominated the second boys’ and girl’s varsity races to cruise to an easy sweep at Arabia Mountain. Seven Vikings finished in the top nine of the boys’ race led by Dawit Alemu (18:51.72) and Will Smith-Purcell (18:59.40) who took second and third, respectively, behind Clarkston’s Hussen SAdik (18:31.09). Clarkston’s Muhozi Aimable took fourth in 19:10.85 and the next five runners were all from Lakeside to seal a 23-50 win over the Angora’s. Tucker’s Ebenezer Agaro was eighth in the boys' race to round out the top 10 finishers.
The Southwest DeKalb Panthers and Redan Raiders had to go to a tiebreaker to determine the winner of the first boys’ varsity cross country race at Arabia Mountain on Wednesday with the Panthers’ sixth runner finishing one spot faster for the win. The top five runners for Southwest DeKalb and Redan had the two teams tied at 35 points each after 13 runners had crossed the finish line. Southwest DeKalb sophomore Shonto Williams broke the tie finishing in 14th with a time of 21:26.78 ahead of Redan junior Blake Bastian in 15th in 21:42.13 giving the Panthers the victory in a race that could not get closer for the top two spots. The Southwest DeKalb Panthers and Lady Panthers won by double digits to sweep the second boys’ and girls’ varsity cross country races at the Druid Hills Middle School course on Tuesday. All five of the Panthers finished in the top 10 racers in the boys’ race led by a one-two finish from seniors Jacques Williams (18:15.12) and Christopher Morris (18:31.07) to out do Tucker 24-47. Martin Luther King Jr. was third with 103 and Towers fourth with 159. Brandon Dorsey was fourth in 18:46.80 while sophomores Khalid Johnson (20:25.52) and Shonto Williams (20:26.73) finished eighth and ninth, respectively.
