Learn something new and have a great time during instructional workshops at clay studio
Christine Winokur and Martie Seay, owners of Tucker's Zen and Now Clay Studio, were kind enough to chat with Patch last month about their business. Located at 2534-D Royal Place, Zen and Now is the only craft studio of its kind in the area. We want to make sure that Tuckerians take full advantage of their offerings – including these upcoming workshops. Zen of Throwing ~ Jan. 22, 2011 ~ 1:00 – 4:30 p.m. This workshop is ideal for those wanting to improve upon their wheel throwing techniques. It's a great “touch-up” class, cites Zen and Now's newsletter, and it will help you refine skills such as centering, pulling up and opening. There will also be time spent on pulling cylinders. Class size is limited to ten students. Fees are as follows…

Harmony Yoga & Wellness Center serves to improve the lives of others
"Everyone takes a deep breath when they walk in," Marilyn Morrison said to me as we sat in the welcoming area of Tucker's Harmony Yoga & Wellness Center. Morrison and her business partner of eight years, Patricia Kilpatrick, opened what was then known as Harmony Learning Center in 2003 in the Decatur area; the two met 12 years ago through mutual friends. Harmony Yoga & Wellness Center is a culmination of both women's life journeys, a journey that, for Morrison, was one of healing. "I had a degree in Communications, raised a family, held several jobs," Morrison said. Yet, she still had a feeling of discontent, of her life not fitting into a pre-defined "box," she called it. At the age of 50, when chiropractic couldn't release the strain of …

Todd Miechiels has been a member of Tucker First United Methodist for approximately five years. More than two years ago fellow church member Mimi Sanders mentioned to Miechiels that the kids at church could profit from a guitar instructor. The seed was then planted in Miechiels' head for the guitar class ministry. Miechiels offers the group guitar lessons every Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in room 102. The group learns chords, strumming patterns and sight-reading. Instead of "Mary Had a Little Lamb," the class learns popular Christian praise and worship songs. You can also see Miechiels putting his skill to use on stage with the contemporary worship band, The Forgiven, on Sunday mornings at the "Activities Center" at Tucker First United …

DrumRISE offers djembe classes starting this month
On January 16th, Tucker's Idlewood Rd. will vibrate as DrumRISE's Amy Jackson teaches beginning djembe classes at Harmony Learning Center. It's a six-week series, running from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday evenings. Jackson's classes will mark a return of DrumRISE to Harmony Learning, as Colleen Caffrey, Jackson's business partner, taught her first drum classes at the former Clarimont Rd. locaction in 2006. Jackson and Caffrey met while performing in an all women's percussion group, ConunDRUMS, in 2002 / 2003. Introduced to West African rhythms by Chuck Cogliandro, Jackson and Caffrey fell in love with the music and longed for further instruction. They also wanted to capture and covey to others the sense of community and joy that emerges …

A talk with the owners of Zen and Now Clay Studio
The earthy smell of clay and the calmness of the workspace are immediately welcoming as you walk into Tucker's Zen and Now Clay Studio. Christine Winokur and Martie Seay, business partners and friends for over six years, are passionate about what they do. "We sell joy, right Martie?" asked Winokur. "That's right, you want to buy some?" Seay replied, turning to me. We shared a laugh. As we spoke, Winokur worked on finishing a rattle—one of the recent workshops held at Zen and Now focused on making rattles—and Seay continued constructing frogs by hand. Winokur owned and operated Kickwheel Pottery Supply, Inc. from 1974 until 2010. When asked why she closed the doors, she chuckled a bit ruefully, shook her head and simply blamed it on the "…
