DeKalb Wrestling Championships Continue Saturday

The William S. Venable DeKalb County Varsity Wrestling Championships are underway at Tucker High School.

The 2013 William S. Venable DeKalb County Varsity Wrestling Championships got underway Friday in the Tucker High School Gymnasium that is named after him. Twenty-one teams are competing for the traditional wrestling team title including Arabia Mountain, Cedar Grove, Chamblee, Clarkston, Columbia, Decatur, Druid Hills, Dunwoody, Lakeside, Lithonia, Marist, Martin Luther King Jr., McNair, Miller Grove, Redan, St. Pius X, Southwest DeKalb, Stephenson, Stone Mountain, Towers and Tucker. McNair is the defending champion after capturing its first ever DeKalb County Wrestling Championship in 2012 with a 200.5 to 193 win over Marist. High School Blood Drive Honors Slain Coach

Bill Venable and his son Billy were killed during a 2004 home invasion.

Tucker High School is hosting the ninth annual Red Cross Blood Drive in honor of Coach Bill Venable and his son, Billy. They were killed in January of 2004 when an intruder broke into their home and shot them. It takes place at the school on Thursday, Jan. 24 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. From the Red Cross: Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Most healthy people age 17 and older, or 16 with parental consent, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood and platelets. Donors who are 18 and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements.
