Cedar Grove takes on Region B No. 2 seed Tucker on Wednesday.
The 13th Annual DeKalb County Middle School Basketball Championships move into the Elite Eight round on Wednesday, Feb. 6 with a new champion assured in the girls’ tournament. Two-time defending champion Miller Grove which had to win a play-in game against Stone Mountain on Saturday morning was eliminated by Region D No. 1 seed Cedar Grove later that evening to end the Lady Wolverines’ reign as county champions. Cedar Grove moves on to take on Region B No. 2 seed Tucker at Tucker Middle in a 5 p.m. contest on Wednesday. The 13th Annual DeKalb County Middle School Tournament of Champions and the Junior Varsity Basketball Championships begin play on Saturday, Feb. 2. Play-in and first round games for the Middle School Tournament of Champions begin at 10 a.m. with Champion, Stephenson and Tucker Middle hosting action. The same three sites will host second round play on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 5 and 6:15 p.m. Miller Grove High School will host the semifinals and finals on Friday, Feb. 8 and Saturday, Feb. 9. Tucker travels to Clarkston on Friday with both its girls’ and boys’ teams ranked and trying to lock up sub-region top seeds for the region tournament. The Lady Tigers (19-3, 8-0) are ranked No. 1 in both polls heading into the game with a two-game lead over Stephenson in sub-region play. The Tigers are No. 6 in the AJC and No. 5 in the MaxPrep poll with a 14-7 overall record and 6-2 in sub-region play which is good for a tie for first with Stephenson and North Atlanta. Both Tucker teams enter the week in the Top 10 rankings as they travel to Dunwoody in Region 6A-AAAA. The Lady Tigers (18-3) are No. 1 in both the polls after a thrilling 46-45 victory over then No. 1 and now No. 2 ranked Stephenson (19-3) at home last week. Tucker and Stephenson split nail biters in Region 6-AAAAA basketball action.
Region 6-AAAAA high school basketball is considered one of the toughest regions in the state and Tuesday’s action at Tucker with both games decided in the final seconds upheld that thought. Tucker’s Tori Robinson drove the lane for the game-winning layup with 1:08 to play as the No. 2 ranked Lady Tigers upended the No. 1 ranked Stephenson Lady Jaguars 46-45 in girls’ play. Kerry Watson had given Stephenson a 45-44 advantage by scoring on a steal and a three-point shot to rally the Lady Jaguars (18-3) from a 44-40 deficit to the one-point lead with 3:47 to play. Hamer hits for 30 to lead No. 1 Wolverines to win over No. 8 Tucker.
Kyre’ Hamer was on fire from outside the arc and inside the arc as he scored 30 points to lead his No. 1 ranked Miller Grove Wolverines to an 80-69 victory over No. 8 ranked Tucker at Miller Grove on Friday night. Hamer had given the Wolverines a 19-16 lead heading into the second quarter with a pair of free throws then hit three consecutive from the three-point arc to open a 28-19 advantage with 5:55 left in the half. James Walker and Keith Pinckney took over for Hamer the rest of the first half with Walker hitting for six points and Pinckney adding five to propel Miller Grove (17-3) to a 43-25 halftime advantage. Seventh annual event will by hosted by Arabia Mountain and Clarkston.
Arabia Mountain and Clarkston high schools play hosts to the 2012-13 DeKalb County School District Holiday Tournament beginning with first round action on Saturday, Dec. 15. Eight girls’ teams and eight boys’ teams will compete in championship and consolation brackets with each team to play at least two games. THS Foundation will honor the late coach at Saturday's ceremony.
Tucker High School will dedicate its basketball court to legendary coach A. Z. Johnson on Saturday, Dec. 8. A reception open to all who wish to honor the late coach will be held at the school from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. prior to the boys’ basketball game.
