Tucker High is hosting the DeKalb County All-Star Games next week.
DeKalb County brought home three high school basketball state championships this winter and some of that exciting talent will be on display during the 2013 DeKalb County Basketball All-Star Games on Thursday, April 4 at Tucker High School. The girls’ game is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. with Druid Hills’ Angela Nash coaching the Nash All-Stars while Towers’ Johnny Toombs faces off with Nash with his All-Stars. Nash’s team is led by Class AAAA Player of the Year Miah Spencer (18.7 pts, 5.7 steals, 3.8 assists) of the Class AAAA state champion Columbia Lady Eagles. Four basketball teams make way to state tournament, but Tucker is not among them.
DeKalb County high school basketball teams moved on to the Class AAAAA state playoffs Final Four at the expense of fellow DeKalb teams on Tuesday night. Miller Grove swept a pair of Top 10 match ups at home against fellow DeKalb and Region 6-AAAAA opponent Tucker to pick up two of the Final Four spots. The No. 3 ranked and 2012 Class AAAA state champion Lady Wolverines (25-5) got nine fourth quarter points from senior guard Katie Hunt to rally for a 50-40 victory over the No. 2 ranked Tucker Lady Tigers (25-5). Nine DeKalb County high school basketball teams play beginning Tuesday for a spot in their respective state tournament Final Fours. Six of those teams, all ranked in the Top 10 in Class AAAAA, must face each other for at least the second time this season as they battle in the Class AAAAA quarterfinals with three guaranteed a spot in this weekend’s Final Four at Kennesaw State University. Three DeKalb boys’ teams survive in state playoffs on Saturday.
Columbia, Miller Grove and Tucker boys won to play another day in the 2013 high school basketball playoffs with victories on Saturday night. The trio joins six girls’ teams from DeKalb including Stephenson, Tucker, Miller Grove, Southwest DeKalb, Redan and Columbia in the state quarterfinals which begin next Tuesday. Columbia earned its way to its 10th consecutive appearance in the state playoff quarterfinals dating back to 2004 with a 74-62 road victory over LaGrange (22-7). Senior guard and three-time Class AAA player of the year Tahj Shamsid-Deen rebounded from a 10-point output in the Eagle’s opening round win over Gilmer to score 32 points to lead the Eagles in the win. DeKalb claims four region basketball titles.
State basketball playoffs begin on Tuesday and DeKalb County has four teams entering as No. 1 seeds after claiming region championships on Saturday. The No. 5 ranked Tucker Tigers (18-9) finished as the No. 4 seed out of the region and will travel to Sprayberry (19-9) on Wednesday in the first round of the state playoffs. Druid Hills ended a run through the Region 2-AAAAAA Tournament with a thrilling 82-81 overtime victory over No. 1 seed Rockdale County (17-8) in boys’ action at Luella. The Red Devils (15-9) entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed and knocked off No. 3 seed Lovejoy, No. 2 Luella and No. 1 Rockdale County in taking the region title to earn a No. 1 seed heading into the Class AAAAAA state playoffs on Tuesday. Region titles are up for grabs on Saturday with a distinct DeKalb County flavor as eight DeKalb high school basketball teams play for their respective region titles and a No. 1 seed heading into the state tournaments beginning on Tuesday. Miller Grove (24-3) and Stephenson (16-11) meet for the second time this season, but a region championship is on the line at Mays. Miller Grove, the No. 1 ranked team in Class AAAAA, defeated No. 5 Tucker (18-8) 72-53 to reach the championship tilt. Region tournament action continued on Wednesday night with seven DeKalb County high school basketball teams winning their way into the state tournament. The No. 3 ranked Miller Grove Lady Wolverines (21-4) were the first to earn a state tourney berth as they knocked off the Martin Luther King Jr. Lady Lions 82-29 in the first Region 6-AAAAA game at Mays. Tashi Thompson scored six of her game-high 26 points in the first quarter as Miller Grove jumped out to a 20-6 lead and never looked back. The Lady Lions would get no closer than that 14-point deficit the rest of the game. Region 6-AAAAA teams won in county matchups this week.
Four DeKalb teams came away winners in All-DeKalb County matchups on Tuesday in Region 6-AAAAA. Martin Luther King Jr. picked up exciting victories in both the girls’ and boys’ brackets. The Lady Lions (7-17) slipped past Lakeside (7-18) 37-35 to advance while the Lions (7-17) nipped Dunwoody (9-17) 48-47 to move one step closer to a state playoff berth. The 13th Annual DeKalb County Middle School Basketball Championships wrapped up quarterfinal play on Wednesday night to set up both the girls’ and boys’ Final Four on Friday, Feb. 8 at Miller Grove High School. The girls’ semifinals features a battle of undefeated teams as Region B titlist Champion (14-0) takes on Region C champ Columbia (14-0) in the 7:10 p.m. girls’ semifinal at Miller Grove High School. Champion knocked off Salem (7-6) and Columbia got past Region A No. 2 seed Stephenson (11-3).
