Last Chance: Register for Summer Youth Leadership Academy

Classes will be held from June 3 – August 3 at the Tucker Recreation Center.

The registration deadline for the Summer Youth Leadership Academy is May 24. Scholarship opportunities are available and applicants may be eligible for discounts of up to 50%. There are also a few seats left at no charge for eligible parents. Forward the completed application to teachoneacademy6@gmail.com or via fax at (866) 899-8763. Each student will be given a preparatory assignment prior to the first class. Classes will be held from June 3 – August 3 and students can choose to attend at either location: Tucker Recreation Center (4898 Lavista Road, Tucker, GA 30084) or The Grove CDC (1879 Glenwood Ave, Atlanta, GA 30316). Obama Rocks Morehouse in the Rain

President Barack Obama gave the 129th commencement address speech on a wet and rainy Sunday afternoon, May 19th, at Morehouse College. Obama began his remarks to an excited yet wet crowd,most of whom had been seated as early as 6 am. at approximately 11:30 am. The sky opened just before the speech began, and the crowd was treated to a steady downpour throughout. Obama quipped that, “I would be out there with you, but the Secret Service gets nervous.” Obama was greeted with a big cheer when he emerged from a building adjacent to the stage with Morehouse College president John Silvanus Wilson, a former White House aide. The invocation was given by Rev. Raphael Warnock of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous church. …

Tucker Students Among DeKalb Scholarship Recipients

Two students are featured in a Youtube video about the scholarships.

Tucker High School's Ramon Wyndell Johnson and Feven Laine are among 26 students recently awarded college scholarship funding from DeKalb county. Johnson and Laine are featured in video about the awards, along with a student from Southwest DeKalb high school. The video is attached to this article. Learn more about the scholarships, which were presented this past on Tuesday by DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis.

DeKalb All-Star Soccer Games Set for Monday

The third annual games are scheduled for Clarkston's Hallford Stadium on May 20.

The third annual DeKalb County All-Star Soccer games will be played at James. R. Hallford Stadium in Clarkston on Monday, May 20. The two games (girls and boys) match the top DeKalb County soccer players from Inside the Perimeter schools vs. Outside the Perimeter schools. The girls game kicks off the event at 5:30 p.m. as the OTP squad tries to break the ITP’s two game winning streak. The OTP squad is coached by Dunwoody’s Edgar Flores and assisted by Tricia Silvera and features some of the top scorers in the county including Southwest DeKalb senior Kristen Peagler who set the season scoring record for the county with 55 goals in 2013. Tucker High School's Valedictorian, Salutatorian Named

DeKalb county school district released the names of this year's valedictorians and salutatorians.

  Andrew Melissas is Tucker High School's 2013 valedictorian and Aniya Hamilton is the salutatorian, DeKalb county school district announced Tuesday. Melissas is Georgia Tech-bound and Hamilton will attend University of Georgia, the district said in the announcement. Tucker's graduation is scheduled for May 21, 7 p.m. at The Arena at Gwinnett Center, according to the district's website.      

DeKalb All-Star Baseball Classics Set for May 28

Tucker players are in the roster.

Georgia State University is playing host to the 2013 DeKalb County Junior and Senior All-Star Baseball Classics on Tuesday, May 28 at GSU's Baseball Complex next to Panthersville Stadium. The format is different this year as the teams will be split from the East and West sides of the county instead of North and South. The squads will be made up of the top 18 juniors and seniors from each side. The Juniors kick off the new format at 4 p.m. in a single nine inning game in the fifth annual contest. The East will be coached by Arabia Mountain’s Eric Hoxie and assisted by Stephenson’s Marco Jackson. The West squad is led by Columbia’s Steve Dennis and assisted by Chamblee’s Brian Ely. DeKalb Schools Seeking Parental Input on Conduct

The district is writing a new Code of Student Conduct and wants to hear from parents.

The DeKalb County School District is seeking input from parents on the 2013-2014 Code of Student Conduct - Student Rights and Responsibilities and Character Development Handbook. The Handbook outlines the policies, rules and regulations that govern student discipline in the District including dress code, behavior, bus information, electronic communication devices, violence against students, school personnel and other student responsibilities.   It is intended to inform students in grades K-12 of the types of behaviors that are unacceptable. Students are taught and tested on the contents of the handbook. Burrell Ellis to Present College Scholarships at Fernbank Museum Ceremony

Scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded to 26 DeKalb high school seniors accepted into a two- or four-year college or vocational training program.

Twenty-six DeKalb high school seniors will be presented with college scholarships during the first DeKalb County Education Scholarship Fund Awards Ceremony on Tuesday May 14 at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History, the county announced Friday. The scholarships, up to $5,000, will be given to DeKalb county school district seniors accepted into a two or four-year college or vocational training program. DeKalb county CEO Burrell Ellis, the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce and the DeKalb County School District created the DeKalb Education Scholarship Fund, an effort that raised $120,000. A selection committee formed by the chamber reviewed more than 135 applications. Award-winning students were picked based on financial need and merit. Ellis, …

Soccer: Tucker, Druid Hills Fall in State Playoffs' Second Round

Tucker finishes 12-6-1 on the season and as the Region 6-AAAAA runner-up.

The 2013 soccer seasons came to an end for the Tucker Tigers and Druid Hills Red Devils with losses in the second round of their respective state playoffs. The No. 9 ranked Tucker Tigers traveled to No. 6 ranked Allatoona on Wednesday and lost a tight 2-1 decision to the Buccaneers to fall out of the Class AAAAA state playoffs. Tucker finishes 12-6-1 on the season and as the Region 6-AAAAA runner-up. Druid Hills battled North Cobb to a 0-0 deadlock for 52 minutes before North Cobb scored two goals on the way to a 2-0 victory at Hallford Stadium on Wednesday night. DeKalb School District's Chief Financial Officer Resigns

Michael Perrone's resignation follows school officials' discovery last weekend of millions in overlooked revenue.

DeKalb county school district's chief financial officer, Michael Perrone, has resigned, according to Crossroads News. The move comes after the discovery several days ago that the district has millions in overlooked revenue. Perrone's resignation to interim superintendent Michael Thurmond this week did not specify his reasons for leaving, Crossroads reports. Thurmond, according to the news outlet, said he had "no problem" with Perrone and that he did not ask for his resignation. An auditor for DeKalb schools, Michael Bell, took Perrone's place.
