The former chairman of DeKalb's school board reacts to Gov. Deal's decision.

The Governor is wrong in his decision to suspend members of the DeKalb County Board of Education. The DeKalb School District has been placed on probation by a private accrediting institution called SACS which holds considerable sway in the education community. SACS has made a multitude of allegations, some of which I agree with, but all of them were developed unilaterally in a shrouded process. The leadership of SACS is not elected by the public, do not have to conform to open meetings and open records laws, and are not subject to constitutional due process as they sit in judgment of public institutions and elected officials. The DeKalb Board of Education, like all school boards, is a public institution. We have open meetings, open …

Some parents think public comments are being used to convey the wrong message to the school board's new Interim Superintendent.
The DeKalb County Board of Education held its first public meeting on Feb. 11 since reaching a costly separation agreement with former Superintendent Dr. Cheryl Atkinson. It also was the public's first official introduction to a newly-appointed Interim Superintendent, Michael Thurmond, the former state labor commissioner. The school board complex on Mountain Industrial in Stone Mountain was packed, despite what the camera showed to audiences watching the live webcast. The public speaking time slots were filled to capacity as well, which made up for the relatively light business agenda covered by the board. On the agenda for the evening was the approval of AP Tests, more computers for STEM labs and a small increase in capacity for the …

There's a thriller on the loose and it's showing at the Tucker Movie Tavern.
Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh is behind this thriller that shows you what can happen when prescription medications like antidepressants go haywire in "Side Effects." Rooney Mara plays a woman with a lot going on in her life. Her husband, Channing Tatum, is getting out of prison. She's in a financial crisis and in deep depression. Her psychiatrist, Jude Law, subscribes an experimental new drug at the request of another medical colleague played by Catherine Zeta-Jones. While on the drug, Mara's character sleepwalks her way into a murder, and from there we go on a thriller roller-coaster ride. There is a surprise ending to this film so I will not give away too much information. I will say that the film is not quite what it seems …

By Jennifer Hatfield, President of the Evansdale Elementary School PTA and Tucker parent of two. Having attending numerous DeKalb Board of Education meetings, I can tell you I have NEVER witnessed the DeKalb board act in such a manner. I hope that Governor Deal watched the webcast of the hearing since he was not present. I believe that the testimony of the nine current board members painted a pretty clear picture of what is wrong. Our system is broken, though only two members, Dr. Speaks and Mrs. Jester, had the courage to express any accountability. Sadly, they are two of the most honest and hard-working members of the board. In the next hearing in February, it may be helpful to call Dr. Atkinson and former BOE members Paul Womack, Don …

Did Sarah Copeland-Woods lie during the School Board hearing last Thursday?

Greetings Governor Deal, Legislators, and State Department of Education Members, I am resident of Dekalb County with a child attending Tucker Middle School. I am very concerned about the state of the Dekalb County School District (DCSD) and the Dekalb Board of Education (DBOE). Thank you for the hearing on Jan. 17, 2013. I was very impressed with the depth of the questioning. Clearly the members of Georgia Department of Education had done their research prior to the hearing. I was significantly less impressed with the quality of the answers provided by the DBOE. One answer in particular made my heart sink. When Sarah Copelin-Wood was asked about emails that negatively affect the chain of command she replied, (I am quoting to the best of my…

Atlanta is again at a crossroads after a heartbreaking loss in the NFC Championship game. Share your thoughts.
The 2013 Super Bowl will be Sunday, February 3, in New Orleans. Game time is 6:30 p.m., CBS. --- The Atlanta Falcons went farther in the playoffs in 2013 than in any year since the 1998 season. Yet, there's still the taste of defeat. And that makes many Falcons fans wonder, "What does it take?" Sunday's 28-24 loss to San Francisco at the Georgia Dome was tough for Atlanta in that the Falcons, who were the top-seeded NFC playoff team, had a 17-0 lead in the first half. According to media reports, that made it the largest comeback in the history of the NFC Championship. That shows the Falcons' chief weaknesses - defense, and a championship tradition. And those should be the team's top priorities to keep moving forward. So, Tucker football …

Arnold is on the screen, so you know what to expect -- bullets and action.
Arnold is back from being a two-term governor to playing a small-town sheriff. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a semi-retired sheriff in an sleepy southwest border town. He and his motley crew must now stop a notorious drug kingpin from escaping into Mexico in "The Last Stand." The bullets fly. There is plenty of action. But the star looks a bit rusty. You quickly come to the realization that this film is undeniably ludicrous. Look, Arnold has never been a good actor, but it's a bit worse since he got back from being the "Governator." So what does he do to make up for his lack of talent? Cue an explosive montage! This movie is simply a testosterone-infused piece of cinema. It's cynical and satirical, coming at you in the form of a semi-…

In theaters this week, an impossible journey to the core of the human heart.
A family of five begin their winter vacation in Thailand, looking for some fun in the sun. Soon their holiday turns into a nightmare as a giant tsunami rises up from the ocean and sweeps them away in "The Impossible." Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor head up this cast that tells the true story of one family's experience during the devastating 2004 tsunami that devoured Southeast Asia. The acting, though there is very little dialogue, is amazing and the special effects, especially in the first 45 minutes, are mind-boggling. Watts is being considered for an Oscar for her performance but the kids, in my opinion, steal every scene in which they appear. The film runs two hours, and it is a bit sappy at times, perhaps too sentimental. So the Flick-…

The success of the 2012 Obama campaign was attributed by some, in part, to a perceived war on women by Republicans. But there are those who believe it is men who are really the victims now.
Author Suzanne Venker created a controversy recently when she wrote an article previewing her latest book, “How to Choose a Husband (And Make Peace with Marriage)." In the article, Venker alludes to the fact that there is indeed a battle of the sexes, but it is men who are on the losing end. In an interview on Fox News, Venker reports that now that for the first time in history, women have become the majority of the U.S. workforce. In addition, women are getting most of the degrees. The outcome is a change in the relationship between men and women. And the result – men are no longer so keen to get married. The reason, Venker said, is that men claim women aren’t women anymore. Venker went on to question whether maybe some of the problems of…

I think you "kinda" got interested in being on the school board in the first place...for your own interests. Isn't that what the investigators revealed and what started this ousting? I applaud the govenor. Tax payers should not have to pay money to public positions if they support self interest. Disgusting low life calling upon low life to keep the self interest going.   more ›
