The Tucker resident died this week at 96.
Elizabeth Cartier of Tucker died on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by her husband Stanley, according to Georgia Obituaries. A funeral for family and friends will be held May 11, 2013 at noon in the Chapel of Floral Hills Funeral Home in Tucker with Rev. Nancy F. Lane officiating. Interment will follow at the Floral Hills Memory Gardens with her great-grandsons Hunter Gibson, Alex Gibson, Landon Hayes, Austin Hayes and Sam Manzo serving as pallbearers. Private visitation takes place on Friday.
A memorial service for Gene Wise will be held on Saturday, April 13 at 2 p.m. at the Tucker First United Methodist Church. He was a member of their Wesley Fellowship Sunday School class for over 40 years. Wise died on April 1 at the age of 87. He was a contributor to the Smoke Signal, the community newspaper for the Smoke Rise area. After serving in World War II, Wise studied Industrial Engineering at Georgia Tech and graduated in 1949. He was employed as a general contractor before becoming a commercial real estate broker. Wise was also involved with the DeKalb Republican Party. "One of a kind," say his friends.
A private ceremony will be held on April 6 for Marty Counts on the shore of the lake he loved and where he died in a boating mishap. The 47-year-old Tucker resident was reported missing on Feb. 11 after a nighttime fishing excursion on Lake Lanier alone on his boat, and his body was found five weeks later. The cause of death has not yet been established, according to Melissa Cummings of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division, but there was "no apparent trauma." She told Patch that "it does not appear that he fell and struck his head...but cannot yet rule out other health issues, such as a heart attack." The body was found in Lake Lanier over the weekend and identified on Monday.
A body pulled from Lake Lanier on Sunday has been identified as that of George 'Marty' Counts, missing for over a month after going fishing at night on his boat. A autopsy Monday conducted by a Forsyth County coroner confirmed his identity. Counts was 47 and owned a house near the lake, but was a Tucker resident. Friends said it was not unusual for him to go out late on the water. His remains were discovered in the Little Ridge area of the lake by two fishermen Sunday, March 17 around 9:30 a.m. He was reported missing on Feb. 11 when his boat was found empty. Corkran was diagnosed with thyroid cancer six months ago.
A memorial service will be held this month for Cassie Corkran, who died Feb. 24 of cancer at her Smoke Rise home at the age of 55. The 'Celebration of Life' will be held at the Smoke Rise Country Club, 4900 Chedworth Drive, on March 17 from 12 noon until 3 p.m. Corkran is survived by her mother, Blanche Taylor; husband, Dr. Edward Corkran, and daughter, Reilly Corkran, among many other relatives. The seventh grader suffered from a seizure disorder.
Taivon Seegers, known to his friends as "Turtle," died on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013 at the age of 12 after collapsing at his home. Sources at Tucker Middle School, where Tavion was a seventh grader, said he had suffered a seizure at a school dance a few days before his death and had been treated at a local hospital. After returning home, he took a shower and had another seizure, and died as a result of drowning. Services are entrusted to Gregory B. Levett & Sons Funeral Home at 351 N. Clarendon Avenue in Scottdale. Another TMS student also died last week, in an unrelated incident. Details are forthcomimg.

Blackwell will be buried with full military honors.
Tucker resident Sam Hoyte Blackwell will be remembered by family and friends at a funeral service this Saturday, Jan. 19 at Floral Hills. Blackwell, who was 92, died on Jan. 8 after a brief illness, according to the Ledger-Examiner of Columbus, Ga. where he grew up. A graduate of Georgia Tech, Blackwell served in the U.S. Naval Air Corps during World War II and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross. Visitation will be at Floral Hills in Tucker beginning at 9 a.m. with the funeral starting at 10:30 am. Interment with full military honors will be at Parkhill Cemetery, 4161 Macon Road in Columbus at 2:30 pm.

The long-time Tucker resident died Jan. 11.
Doris Ophelia McLawhorn of Tucker was laid to rest on Monday, Jan. 14 at Floral Hills Cemetery. McLawhorn was 93 when she died on Jan. 11. Oscar McLawhorn, her husband of 38 years, predeceased her. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Tucker and had recently been staying in Florida with her twin sister Laurice Pickens. Photos of her life can be seen here.

The Tucker resident died on Dec. 27.
A graveside service was held Sunday for Edgar H. Smith of Tucker, who died on Thursday, Dec. 27 after a long illness. Known to all as Eddie, he was a 1966 graduate of Tucker High School and served in Vietnam. Smith was an avid Monopoly player and had just celebrated his 64th birthday three days before his death. The Caldwell & Cowan website reports the family would like donations made to the Petra Foundation in lieu of flowers.
