Hired! Oman: A Career Profile

The story of Oman's successful training and new job at WOW In-Sync in Tucker.

Each of our participants comes to WOW with unique qualities and career interests. That’s to be expected of any individual anywhere, of course. For some, they must acclimate to the culture at WOW and determine if it suits them. Many times, this process provides key opportunities to work towards unlocking inner potential in creative ways. Oman’s story illustrates this idea quite literally.

Oman was one of our quieter and more reserved participants during his early days at Simply Biz. He demonstrated that he clearly benefits from routine; so much so that he required additional time during his work evaluation (our transitional period where we determine whether an individual and Simply Biz are an appropriate “fit”) in order to best demonstrate the ways in which he could succeed within WOW’s training structure. With this extra opportunity, along with some personalized illustration projects, Oman settled in and decided he wanted to give it a go with Simply Biz. It turned out to be a great decision for all parties involved.

Soon, Oman was participating in a full slate of community based employment training as well as exercising all of the skills involved in illustration. Vocational Skills Coordinator Arnold Filomeno quickly drew attention to the quality of Oman’s hands on work. After several months of practicing at a variety of sites related to retail, service, non profit offices, and more, Oman identified custodial work as an interest/preference in his path to employment. Through out the summer of 2012, he honed these skills with the support of Simply Biz staff and our community partners.

Before long, the quality of Oman’s work clearly demanded an official paid position. He was working independently, practicing self monitoring, striving for quality and completion of work, and remaining on time and on track with all assigned duties. At our home Tucker Branch, WOW maintains a large multifaceted facility which requires substantial upkeep in order for operations to run smoothly. Oman was hired to complete a regular cleaning rotation. His title is “Housekeeping Specialist,” partly because he goes so far above and beyond the typical scope of duty that one sees with many cleaning crews. In his first few months of employment, Oman has clearly shined. To quote WOW president Karen Lynn:

“We hired him because he cleans BETTER THAN ANYONE we have ever had in my 14 years with WOW. He is attentive to detail. When you walk up to the building you can tell Oman has been here because it is so well maintained. Each morning the restrooms are clean, fresh and appropriately stocked. He takes care to clean vents and other out of the way places. He also routinely checks in to let you know that he has taken care of details, etc.

One more big thing too….. He reports to work every morning at 5:45 a.m. That’s huge- and it’s exactly what’s required in any similar position. He shows up appropriately dressed, work focused, and moves through our facility of 14,400 sq feet. It’s a big house!”

Suffice it to say, he has excelled. Staff have provided glowing reviews to this point. Raquel Smith, Employment Specialist, said of Oman’s performance, “All of the employees and participants know him and respect his work. He also takes a lot pride in the work. He is really excelling in his duties.”
We at WOW are so proud of Oman and his success and we look forward to supporting him as he continues to strive for more career achievements and new opportunities in the near future.
