HIRED! Andrew: A WOW In-Sync Career Profile

You may have read Andrew’s two blog entries detailing his training and internship experiences at WOW In-Sync. It’s time to check back in.

Andrew has spent the greater part of 2012 learning the ins and outs of modern office administrative functions, becoming familiar with confidentiality policy and WOW privacy practices, and developing his tolerance for a fast paced, contemporary work environment.

His internship responsibilities began with simple printing and preparation of documentation packets for WOW participants. In doing so, Andrew learned the primary rules to administration in five simple steps. When asked what they are, Andrew often recites, “Confidentiality, organization, and “good but fast,” “time is money,” and finally, “be a professional at all times.” Better yet, he began to put these ideals in practice as he moved through training. Other work environments for exploration and training included the Lilburn Library, and Lion’s Lighthouse in Chamblee.

During his internship, Andrew gradually took on more responsibilities around the WOW corporate offices, including database oversight, office supply and mail duties, and lots more. His maturity and work habits grew exponentially throughout 2012, impressing staff, family, and other key figures in his life.

With such successful training and internship experiences having such a profound impact, WOW leadership came to a startling realization. Andrew had so effectively learned so many of WOW’s day to day procedures, and had shown such aptitude learning new processes and using technology, that he had practically claimed a position with WOW that could not be ignored. As WOW takes on a monumental shift to paperless filing and a new information management system, Andrew’s paid internship has morphed into an official hire. He is now an employee of WOW In-Sync, Inc., holding the title of “Assistant Administrator.”

Employment Specialist Raquel Smith said of Andrew: “He has successfully incorporated himself into our working office environment with his bright and sunny demeanor. He’s well liked and accepted amongst his peers. It’s great to see that his professionalism and work skills continue to grow every day.”

Andrew’s story is an inspiring one. It began with some training and job placement experiences that were not particularly suited to his needs or his substantial skills and abilities. However, he was soon connected to Simply Biz, and from there, he began to make steady progress. As an employee, Andrew begins his day with morning exercises with his friends and peers training in Simply Biz, then clocks in and gets to work. He displays excellent self-management skills and work ethic. When asked about his new job, Andrew replied, “I’m excited. I love it. It’s been a great experience. I’m great at scanning and organizing.” 

WOW President Karen Lynn added, “Andrew’s office is right across the hall from mine and I’ve had the opportunity to watch him grow as a professional. Andrew always comes in nicely dressed, work-ready, and is dependable and flexible. He has grown in his skills and is working independently on many of his assigned projects. He is quick to let us know if there is a problem and the quality of his work is great.  We are glad to have Andrew as part of our team!”

Now seems like a fitting time to look back at Andrew’s own words from one of his first blog entries on the website: “And there is one more thing: I want to get a job as a filing clerk. I believe that’s something I will do.” Andrew’s ability to learn new things, utilize technology, and adapt to changing responsibilities bodes well for his employment future, and has ensured that filing was only the start. We’re excited to watch him continue to grow here at WOW!
