Vote Now: Henderson Park Community Garden

The park is competing for a $4,000 award which would be used for a new greenhouse.

The Henderson Park Community Garden is one of the nationwide finalists - and the only one from Georgia - up for an award from DeLoach Vineyards and Organic Gardening magazine.  The top five gardens will each win $4,000 and HPCG is in third place.

We're competing to win one of the awards, which we'd use to purchase a greenhouse. A greenhouse would help us to achieve even greater sustainability by providing the space and sunlight needed to house a large number of seedlings.

Starting our own seeds is preferable to purchasing plants, especially those grown a good distance away. Last year, we started dedicating space in our garden to growing heirlooms and began saving their seeds, hoping to eventually produce plants that are perfectly suited to our growing conditions.

If our efforts are successful (and, so far, they appear to be), we’ll reduce our dependence not only on growers but on seed companies as well. As with our commitments to water conservation and organic gardening, we focus on education and encouragement to promote sustainability.
