Designing the geography of a city

The City of Briarcliff Initiative has proposed a city with a clear set of borders. Everyone will know when they are inside or outside the city of Briarcliff. Cross an expressway, and you’re in.

We designed a city with no “cherry picking” of commercial, hospital or park property. We made no effort to exclude any specific group, or to build around a specific group. The design is not based on theoretical considerations of commercial/residential mix; it takes what’s here, and runs with it. We didn’t start with ourselves and build a city around us; we started with a city and talked to people in that area.

On the other hand, we are not absolutist about any details of the size, shape or structure of the ultimate city; we frequently discuss options to better sync with our neighbors’ ideas. But since we are not claiming to be simply “educational”, we are free to propose the specifics of a city, and promote it to the public.

We are open to discussing the specific design of the ultimate city with anyone. We have talked frequently with people in Tucker and other surrounding areas. We have made it clear that we are open to discussing with the Lakeside organization the future city that will formally be proposed to the Legislature. We hope that the Lakeside organization would also at some point be available for discussions of the various options.
