Tucker Wrestler Advances To State Meet

The GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Tournament starts in Macon this week.

Thirty-one DeKalb County wrestlers advanced from Sectionals to the GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Tournament at the Centreplex in Macon beginning on Thursday, Feb. 14.

Class AAAAA schools from DeKalb led the way with 21 qualifiers with seven coming from Area 6-AAAAA champion Southwest DeKalb. The Panthers are led by Abud-Rhaman Yasir (145) and his 38-1 record.

Lakeside put four wrestlers into the state tournament Round of 16 including junior Alex Rotta (182) who is 47-14 in his junior year and the Area champ.

Junior Sunny Sharma (113) leads two Dunwoody wrestlers into the state action with his 39-9 record while Arabia Mountain is led by Alema Favors (126) 33-1 record with two wrestlers as well.

Stephenson’s contingent of two wrestlers is led by a pair of Area champs in Stephen Wylie (152) and Darian Perry (170) along with Miller Grove’s two area champs in Wesley Williams (29-5) and Thadius Nelson (285).

Six Class AAA wrestlers from DeKalb County advanced as McNair was in the forefront with five of its 11 Sectional qualifiers advanced to the state event. McNair’s contingent is led by a pair of wrestlers with just one loss on the season in senior Khalil Williams (120) and Frederick Armstrong (39-1). Williams who took fourth at state in 2012 enters this year’s tournament with a 53-1 record while Armstrong is 39-1 overall.

Towers put one wrestler into the state tournament in sophomore Derival Stevens (182) and Lithonia sophomore Kirkglen Hudson (106) is 47-0 and heads up the four DeKalb wrestlers from Class AAAA qualifying for state.

Stone Mountain put three into the state tournament in Deunte Moseley (160), Damian Schofield (170) and Silas Stephens (195).

Classes AAAA through Class AAAAA start competition on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. while Class AAA hits the mats at 1 p.m. on Friday.
