Each week through the high school season, Patch will share our predictions on local football games — and ask for yours.

Ah, the optimism of a new football season.

Teams that struggled last year just need some confidence to turn things around. Teams that fell short of their goals are dedicated more than ever to get it done this time. Teams that won it all have the swagger that comes with knowing how to reach the top.

You may never see your favorite team in a better light than you do now … before the reality of game time can change everything.

Tucker vs. Southwest DeKalb: This special Thursday night season-opener is a TV game that features two of DeKalb’s most successful programs. The 7:30 p.m. game at Hallford Stadium will be shown live (WSB Chanel 2.2; Comcast 248 and Charter 127).

Both made the playoffs last year. Tucker went 13-1, losing in the Class AAAA semifinals. SWD went 8-3 and lost in the first round of the playoffs.

For sure, this game will feature plenty of college prospects. The big question is whether or not SWD has closed the gap enough to avenge last year’s 50-19 loss to Tucker.

But the Tigers are ranked No. 1 for a reason, and until someone proves otherwise … Tucker 34, SWD 24.
