Tucker’s Asha Bashir Wins Gold Medal in Gymnastics Championships

Lakeside takes 2012 DeKalb County Gymnastics title.

Lakeside Sophomore Meg Stephens won four gold medals, including the All-Around title, to lead the school to a 4.275 point victory over three-time defending champion Dunwoody in the 2012 DeKalb County Gymnastics Championships held at Dunwoody on Monday.

Lakeside had Stephens and fellow sophomore Linsey Bergstrom in the top three in the All-Around to put together a team total of 98.225 to end two years of runner-up finishes to Dunwoody which finished with a 93.950 total.

Tucker was third with 84.750 points followed by Southwest DeKalb with 74.175 and Arabia Mountain with 72.600 to round out the top five teams.

The title was Lakeside’s 17th overall since the girls’ championships began in 1966 and the first since 2008. Dunwoody’s streak of consecutive titles ends at three with the Lady Wildcats tied with Redan for third with seven titles overall while Tucker is a distant second to Lakeside with nine titles.

Stephens had a combined total of 34.175 to take the gold in the All-Around just .875 of a point ahead of second place Oksana Casey of Dunwoody who finished with a 33.300 total on the evening. Bergstrom was third with a total of 31.850 followed by 2011 county champion sophomore Camille Cassar of Arabia Mountain at 31.450 in fourth, Dunwoody sophomore Lizzie Marra in fifth (31.100) and senior Asha Bashir of Tucker was sixth with a 29.900 total.

Stephens won the balance beam (8.650) and the floor exercise (9.025) outright and tied Casey of Dunwoody for the uneven parallel bars gold with a score of 8.700. The 9.025 in the floor exercise was the highest score of the meet. Lakeside freshman Jennifer Honein took bronze in the bars with a score of 8.200.

Cassar was right on Stephens heels in the floor event as she scored a 9.000 to take the silver while Casey took bronze with a mark of 8.600. Bergstrom was second in the beam at 8.200 with Casey taking her second bronze of the competition with an 8.000.

Tucker’s Bashir grabbed the gold medal in the vault with an 8.300 score followed by freshman Kelsey Williamson and Bergstrom of Lakeside in a tie for the silver with a score of 8.250.
