Tucker High Volleyball Team Makes History

The volleyball team is advancing in the state championship tournament.

The Tucker High School Varsity Girls Volleyball Team made history last night. For the first time in the history of the school, the team advanced in the state championship tournament.

While the 2007 and 2008 teams were the last to qualify for the state tournament, they both lost in the first round. In the state tournament rounds, teams must win the best three out of five games to win the match and advance.

This year’s team, led by two captains--senior Aniya Hamilton (Outside Hitter) and junior Alyssa Anderson (Setter)--traveled to North Paulding High School in Dallas, Ga. intent on advancing further into the tournament.

The ninth-ranked North Paulding won the first game in a nail biter after Tucker was called several times for touch violations. The Lady Tigers then went to work. Tucker opened the second game with a nine-point run to jump out to an early lead. However, North Paulding fiercely battled back to tighten the score. Tucker prevailed in game two 25-22.

After a brief intermission, junior Sabrina Tucker (Middle Hitter/Blocker) started
game three with a powerful hit to set the tone for the remainder of the night. Joined by fellow juniors Erica Davenport (Middle Hitter/Blocker) and Beverly Eith (Libero) with several key blocks and serves respectively, Tucker moved on to win the important swing game three.

Game four, like the entire match, proceeded with back and forth point scoring as both teams battled without much success to string together consecutive points. Senior Aniya Hamilton (Outside Hitter) made her presence felt with a timely hit to energize our Lady Tigers. The game moved nip and tuck and arrived at game point with Tucker seizing the game and match on an ace served by another senior, Shantrelle Monroe (Left Back).

We are so proud of our entire 2012 Lady Tiger Volleyball team, which also includes seniors Jori Fortson (Outside Hitter) and Beja Turner (Right Back), junior Natalie Beaver (Right Back), sophomore Tiffany Harrison (Outside Hitter) and freshman Nitaira Wilkes (Right Back).

The Tucker Lady Tiger Volleyball team will travel down to Harris County High School on Oct. 23. The school is located at 8281 Highway 116, Hamilton, GA 31811.
