Tucker Dispatches Miller Grove 37-6

Defense dominant as Tigers move to 7-0.

For the fourth consecutive game, Tucker (7-0) held its opponent to one touchdown, more than making up for the Tigers’ least effective offense in weeks and hobbling Miller Grove’s (4-3) campaign to reach the postseason.

Jordan Landry and Joe Rush made their presence known on defense for the second week in a row, coming up with huge hits all over the field and each forcing a first-quarter turnover to set up short-field scoring drives.

Dallas Rivers and Yusuf Minor carried the Tigers on offense, accounting for 204 rushing yards and four touchdowns between them. Landry scored Tucker’s first touchdown, which once again gave the Tigers an early lead they would not relinquish. Tucker still has not trailed in seven games.

For the first time since Labor Day, Tucker’s offense looked stoppable. Penalties, ball security, and an assortment of mental mistakes plagued the Tigers’ attack. Fortunately for Tucker, Miller Grove had its share of miscues, and the Tigers seized the opportunity to punish them.

Tucker needed only 28 yards to record its first score after Rush sacked Miller Grove junior quarterback Ken Allen, forcing a fumble, then recovered the fumble and ran it to the Wolverine 28. Miller Grove again gave the Tigers a short field after a bad snap on a punt gave Tucker the ball in Wolverine territory. The Tigers missed this opportunity to score after two penalties backed them up across midfield and forced the punt. Landry corrected the Tigers’ mistake on the very next play, intercepting Allen at the Wolverine 39. Minor’s 36-yard touchdown on second and seven put the game out of reach.

Miller Grove’s only score came in the second quarter, as Allen went four-for-five passing with a game-high 32-yard completion to Chris Starks and added 18 yards on the ground in a 79-yard drive. Meko Jackson ran in the touchdown.

Tucker gave up only 53 total rushing yards and frequently broke through Miller Grove’s pass protection, forcing Allen to do most of the work himself.

Josh Dawson recorded a sack for loss of 12 yards on third down during the Wolverines’ first drive of the second half. Sancharles Zachery added a sack later in the quarter as Tucker and Miller Grove traded three-and-outs, before Rivers broke through for his 41-yard fourth-quarter score. Jerry Shippy picked up his second sack in as many weeks as time expired in the first half. Marqeeye Biggs recovered a fumble with 10:36 remaining in the game.
