Region Play Underway in Middle School Football

Teams need victories in Week Four to get into playoff contention.

By Mark Brock

Losses in the opening week of region play and off weeks have 12 teams playing to get into playoff contention in their respective regions as only the top two teams advance to the playoffs from each region.

Region 1 has Henderson (1-2) and Sequoyah (0-3) sitting at the bottom of the standings with one region loss each and Bethune returning from an open date looking for its first win of the season and region victory as well.

Henderson and Sequoyah go head-to-head on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Adams Stadium with the winner taking a step towards playoff contention. Bethune is 0-2 on the season and takes on region co-leader Tucker (3-0, 1-0) in an effort to defend its region title from the last five seasons.

Stephenson (1-1, 0-0) and Renfroe (2-1, 1-0) head into the weekend looking for their first Region 2 victories as well. Stephenson is coming off an open week and takes on region co-leader Cedar Grove (2-1, 1-0) as the Jaguars look for a good start in region play.

Renfroe suffered its first loss of the season last week, a 44-28 setback to Cedar Grove, and is looking to even its region record at 1-1 against co-leader Salem (2-1, 1-0), a 26-6 winner over Chamblee.

Region 3 co-leader Lithonia (2-1, 1-0) takes the week off and leaves co-leader Redan (1-2, 1-0) with an opportunity to move atop the standings alone with a win against Peachtree (1-2, 0-1). Peachtree, the defending region champ, is looking to get back into the playoff hunt with a victory.

Columbia (2-0, 0-0) enters Region 3 action with a tussle against McNair (0-3, 0-1) as the Eagles try to pick up their first victory in region play and stay undefeated.

Region 4 also has one co-leader sitting out this week as Stone Mountain (2-1, 1-0) takes its off Saturday, but Chapel Hill (3-0, 1-0) puts its undefeated mark on the line against Druid Hills (0-2, 0-0).

Freedom (2-1, 0-1) and Miller Grove (2-1, 0-1) have a lot at stake in their Region 4 match up as the winner can take a big step forward in the playoff race after tough opening losses.
