Often overlooked in ’s wide margins of football victories this season has been the fine play of the defense, which has allowed only 78 points in seven games and no more than eight points in a game in more than a month.

It’s hard to overlook linebacker Jerry Shippy's impact, however.

The senior is among the team’s statistical leaders on defense. In six games — statistics from last week’s 37-6 win over Miller Grove were not available — Shippy led the team in solo tackles (19) and tackles for losses (six), and was tied for the lead in sacks (two) and total tackles (25).

He was named the Tigers’ defensive player of the week (through Oct. 13) for his five solos, two assists, one sack and one tackle for loss in a win over Mays.

Other top performers

Yusuf Minor: Was named the team’s offensive player of the week for the Mays game. Last week against Miller Grove, he had 78 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Dallas Rivers: The running back rushed for 115 and two TDs against Miller Grove.
