Football: Tucker, Stephenson Set for First Meeting

Week eight schedule and preview for DeKalb high schools.

The Stephenson Jaguars play host to the Tucker Tigers at Hallford Stadium on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in the first ever meeting between the two DeKalb County powers.

Both teams enter the game ranked in the Class AAAAA polls. The Tigers (5-0) are at No. 2 while the Jaguars (4-0) are ranked No. 4 as both teams come out of a bye week. The two teams are both 4-0 in Region 6-AAAAA play.

Tucker has won two state championships in the past four seasons (2008, 2011) including last year’s perfect 15-0 team. First year head coach Bryan Lamar has led the Tigers to a 5-0 start, including 4-0 in Region 6-AAAAA action.

Stephenson is led by long-time DeKalb County coach Ron Gartrell who has 174 wins under his belt at Shamrock and Stephenson. Gartrell is the only coach Stephenson has ever had.

Tucker will put the always tough Stephenson defense to the test with an offense averaging 357 yards rushing and 44 points per game and has five running backs with over 150 yards each on the season. Junior Dallas Rivers and senior Yusuf Minor are both averaging over 100 yards per game.

Stephenson is allowing only 8.3 points per game while scoring at over 43 points per game. The Jaguars are averaging over 300 yards rushing per game.

The No. 3 ranked Martin Luther King Jr. Lions (5-0) are tied atop the Region 6-AAAAA standings along with Tucker and Stephenson and take on Dunwoody (0-5) at North DeKalb at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday Night Football on WSB-TV.

The Lions will be trying to stay ahead in the region standings while Dunwoody is looking for its first victory of the season.

Columbia will try to keep its playoff hopes alive in Region 6-AAAA as the Eagles (2-3, 0-1) host the undefeated Chamblee Bulldogs (5-0, 1-0) in a 7:30 p.m. tilt at Avondale Stadium on Friday.

The Eagles played No. 2 ranked Marist tough before losing 16-0 last weekend. The Bulldogs are coming off their fifth consecutive win of the season and look to move to 2-0 in Region 6-AAAA.
