DeKalb Schools Track: Regional Championships Underway

Panthersville Stadium hosting Region 6-AAAAA Track and Field Championships.

DeKalb County track and field athletes are competing in Region Track and Field Championships this week to earn spots in the GHSA State Sectionals on Saturday, April 27.

Region 6-AAAAA opens the first day of competition today at Panthersville Stadium with the boys’ field events finals, girls’ running events preliminaries and the girls’ 1600 meter run finals beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the long jump and 4x100 meter relay prelims.

The meet continues on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. with the girls’ field event finals beginning with the long jump while the boys’ running event prelims also begin at 5:30 with the 4x100 meter relay. The boys’ 1600 meter run finals are set for 5:50 p.m.

Thursday’s schedule includes the girls’ and boys’ running event finals also slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. with the girls’ 4x100 meter relay. The top four finishers in all events advance to Sectional B at Grovetown being hosted by Greenbrier.

Athletes from Arabia Mountain, Clarkston, Dunwoody, Lakeside Martin Luther King Jr., Miller Grove, Southwest DeKalb, Stephenson, Tucker, Mays and North Atlanta are competing in 6-AAAAA.

Region 6-AAAA got underway on Monday at Lakewood Stadium in Atlanta with the running event prelims, boys’ 1600 meter run finals and the girls’ 3200 meter run finals. DeKalb teams competing in the meet include Chamblee, Columbia, Lithonia, Redan and Stone Mountain.

Redan had three participants advance to Sectional B in Carrollton by qualifying in the top four in their event on Monday. Danielle Worthy (6:01.52) and Rebekah Brown (6:09.77) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the girls’ 1600 meter run while Cedric Roberts (10:35.94) took third in the boys’ 3200 meter run.

The meet continues today at 3:30 p.m. with the field events and on Thursday at 3 p.m. with the running event finals.

The Region 2-AAAAAA Track and Field Championships also got underway on Monday at Twelve Oaks Stadium in Hampton with DeKalb’s Druid Hills competing in field events, track prelims and the boys’ 1600 meter run and girls’ 3200 meter run finals.

Three Druid Hills’ athletes qualified for the AAAAAA Sectional B at Mill Creek next weekend. Pole vaulter Kuenley Tsheowang (9’-00.00”) finished fourth in the pole vault, Max Atkinson (4:42.46) was fourth in the 1600 meter run and Anna Dowling (12:32.43) won the girls’ 3200 meter run.

The meet continues on Wednesday with the running event finals starting at 4 p.m.

The Region 6-AAA Track and Field Championships begin on Wednesday (April 17) at Woodward Academy opening at 4:30 p.m. with the running event prelims and finals in 1600 meter run and 4x800 relay.

The field event finals are set for a 4:30 p.m. start on Thursday with the running event finals set for a 5 p.m. start on Friday. Competing teams from DeKalb County include Cedar Grove, Cross Keys, McNair and Towers.
