DeKalb Schools Track: Peachtree, Henderson Lead Standings

The 2012 DeKalb County Middle School Track Championships are off and running.

The 2012 DeKalb County Middle School Track Championships got underway on Saturday with the field events and preliminaries and continue with the track finals today at Panthersville Stadium.

There was one meet record broken on Saturday as Cedar Grove’s Jazmine Johnson eclipsed the girls’ shot put record by over two feet in winning the event with a toss of 39 feet, eight inches. The throw broke the old record of 37 feet, 4.5 inches set by Tanycia Wooden of Chapel Hill on March 29, 2008.

Peachtree leads the girls’ standings after two events with 17 points including a silver medal by Loran St. Onge in the long jump (15 feet, 1 inch) and bronze medal for Bre Buford in the shot put (36 feet, 0 inches).

Johnson’s first place in the shot put Cedar Grove in a tie for second with Chamblee, Chapel Hill and Henderson with 10 points each. Henderson’s Ly’ric Bolden won the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 11 inches.

Henderson took the lead in the boys’ standings as four competitors placed in the two field events to score 19 points just ahead of second place Tucker with 16. Denzel Harper was the big point getter for Henderson as he won the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 10.5 inches.

Javier Lee led Druid Hills into third place with throw of 44 feet, 10.5 inches to win the shot put.

Tucker’s second place standing was aided by silver medal performances from Jarod Taylor and Nycoles Clements. Taylor was second in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet and Clements was second in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 6.5 inches.

The track finals include nine running events for both the boys and girls in today’s schedule. The first event is the girls’ spring medley relay set to begin at 5 p.m.
